I will try this again The last time I tried posting this it didn't work. Last year I made up 50 fishing noodles [10 of each depth starting at 5 ft]. They are 14 inches long with PVC pipe in the middle using the standard 2 or 2 1/2 inch diameter noodles. After using them I think they need more bouyancy. I seem to have trouble with the hook not setting well in the fish. I am wondering if I add expanding spray foam inside the PVC, will that get me the bouyancy I am looking for? I hate spending money to make more that are longer if I don't have to. Thanks

Pool noodle material generally come in two sizes. One is about 2 1/2" to 2 3/4" diameter, the other is around 3 1/2" diameter. I throw the smaller diameter ones away and only use the large diameter noodles. You get what you pay for.

I like the idea, but what made you decide to use pool noodles. I have always used the orange juice jugs and glue the lid on. White(visible), screw on lids, handle and tons of buoyancy. A good fish can take them down but not for very long. They store good too. I am anxious to see what you do and how it works. Keep us posted!

I decided to use the Pool Noodles for several reasons. I saw a video on Youtube of them and decided that was the way to go. They are easy to store, lay flat on the water, stand up when there is a bite and easy to see. I can carry all 50 of them with me in a plastic storage bin. I write the depth of the line on each one. They work great for small to medium sized fish, but I don't think the smaller noodles will give the hookset I need for the big boys in the Mississippi River. I tried to find the larger diameter noodles when I made the ones I have now, but nobody in my area had any. I will have to order some of the internet.

Guys, take a look in the library. Many ways to make jugs. Personally, I use the larger pool noodles and the kits sold by one of our sponsors.

He sells kits that make flagging jugs. We use the yellow noodles for better visibility, but you can use any color I'd guess and it would still work. Once you use a flagging jug, you'll never go back to a flat jug. You could make these yourself, but for the money, these work great. It's great to be able to check your jugs and know when there has been a bite. No more pulling them in and finding empty hooks at the end of a jugging session. I'm not necessarily pushing the sponsor, though he is a friend and good supporter to our site, but these do work very well. Just my opinion.

The best color in the water I fish Is Flourescent Green. White jugs disappear in the daytime especially with with caps on the lake. Yellow does ok, but Chartreuse green is the best. And Use DOT reflective tape at night that is a must. If the water you are fishing in is stained brown color then white might be great, but I fish clear wather all the time. White just becomes hard to see in the daytime with white caps you can run 3 tanks of gas out of your boat looking. I made 60 noodles out of the BIG swimming noodles and I made 3 per swimming noodle. Mine are big and they are not big enough. I tested them when I first built them and they have about the same flotation and 2 1/2 two liter pop bottles. I have had big fish make them disappear. The biggest Ive caught on them is 39 pounds. It will handle a bigger fish than too I would say it will handle a 50 if they dont get in the trees. But Ive had a few vanish and they werent stolen. They have the lime green colore or bright green colored noodles at wal mart usually every spring. You want the big super noodles. I wouldnt waste my time on them little puny ones. I bought a dozen one time off ebay when I got them they were tiny. I dont know what kind of fish they think that will hold, but I would loose them in one night where I fish. The best I ever done Jug Fishing was me and my brother went and caught 16 cats. That was the limit at that time they weighed over 300 pounds all together. We had them on a ski rope and had to drag them to the truck like a big buck. LOL

The reflection of the sky on the water makes a white jug hard to see in the daytime. Ive used every color you can think of. I used to use 2 liter pop bottles and I spray painted them. I tried Florescent orange, blue, red, white, yellow, but the green is the best for me that is the only color I will use now.

Yep I use circle hooks. I dont use the high dollar stuff. I use Eagle Claw Circle Sea hooks with the Sea Guard Finish on them. It makes them last longer they wont rust. The wire is thinner so the hook buries up easier. 5/0 up to 7/0 is the sizes Ive Used most of mine have 6/0 on them a big fish wont straighten them out very often. Ive had the 5/0 be straightened some and the fish get away, but only if he wraps the line up on something. I would recommend the 6/0 Eagle Claw Circle hook they are pretty good. I usually by mine from Catfish Connection in the bulk packages. I use the 7/0 when I try to target big fish usually with live bait, but I dont fish like that most of the time. I usually use cut bait.
