For the most part I use long shank hooks.. makes it easier to remove them with less damage to the fish

I agree, as far as hook setting not sure though. I often go to a smaller hook if my bait is getting pecked (stolen) or what have you.

 

I like long shank hooks. As someone else said, easier to get out of the fish. I'm usually running 8/0 hooks and it takes a little leverage every now and then to get one out of a big blue jawbone:wink: Also, if you're using J hooks and hook a fish further down it's easier to get at the shank.
