The clutch dog in my evinrude is going bad...it's not completely shot but it's pretty damn close. Was wondering if this is a hard job. To me it looks like you just pull out the gear cluster and pull them off one at a time til you get to the clutch...but usually things look more simple than they actually are...

Can anyone tell me if I am right or wrong?

If I could only remember what motor you have, I could probably tell you. Wait right here while I piss away some of my time and go look at your other posts to see what the hell motor you're talking about.

Be right back (Not)

Take it away Bubba!!!

tim , u will have to pull the entire prop shaft out .............. the detent balls and spring fit under the clutch dog .............. to get all this out u have to take the screw out that holds the shifting cradle in place ... cradle fits on the end of the lower half of the shifting rod /////////////// putting this cradle back in is where the rubber meets the road .................. lmao !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i have found , thru bobpaul's advice, that a piece of low test mono tied to the cradle and lowered into place is a big help ....... use a knot that can easily be pulled aloose ..... don't want mono left in there.....

Thanks. I know how to get the prop shaft out of the lower unit. I just wasnt real sure if all the gears were somehow pressed together or something of that sort. I'm not even totally sure that is the problem now. We took the lower unit apart last night to fix the leaking water tube (installed incorrectly) and had to hose out all the watery gear oil in the gear case. When we did this we noticed the bearing for the gear shaft was shot to hell. So now I'm waiting on those parts to get here. Is there a way to tell just by looking at the clutch dog if it is bad or not?

sure ............. the edges on the ears must be really really sharp , with no rounding off of the edges.............. same goes for the surface where the ears mate in the forward and reverse gear............................... on a lot of omc engines, u can just flip the dog around and use the other side of the ears , walla , new dog by simply turning the dog around on the shaft .................................. i know this can be done on a '77 35 hp and on a '90 50 hp ........................
