3 way catfish rig question?

I mainly fish with a 3 way setup, I use a barrel swivel which I attach my main line and leader line to the top eyelid of the swivel and my weight to the bottom. My leader is usually 9 to 12 inches, and so is my weight line. The biggest problem that seems to be happening is that the leader and weight line like to twist while I'm getting ready to throw the line into the water. I've been using a three way swivel to hopefully correct this but it seems to be still happening. I've even noticed that after letting my bait set for an amount of time in the water that sometimes they get tangled together. What am I doing wrong and is there a better setup for catching channels/blues in a lake!, I try to use 2 to 3 oz weights while fishing, and I normally fish circle hooks with blugill and treble with liver and sometimes danny king stink bait.

I think your problem is the fact that your trying to run the leader and line to the weight with the same length. Your bait and sinker are going to be sitting in the same spot. Definitely sounds like a tangle waiting to happen. If your drifting try switching to a santee rig, if your sitting still then try a Carolina rig or if your dead set on the 3-way, eliminate the line to your leader all together and clip the weight directly to one of the rings on the 3-way swivel.

I do all bank fishing, I normally use a 3 oz weight but at present time I'm using a 2 oz weight. I mainly fish liver and stink bait on a treble hook, unless I catch some small blugill then will use a circle hook. What setup would be best for liver and stink bait, and for fishing live bait? I do all bottom fishing unless I'm trying to catch gills. I was told that I need to keep the bait off the bottom for catfish and that the 3 way was the best? I have fished for years, and I am not even close to knowing much about the setups. Any advise would be highly appreciated, I'm sure I've missed some nice catfish for not using the right setup.

When I use 3 way rigs I like to keep the leader short, only about 5 inches or so. I keep my dropper lines about 12-14 inches.
Too much leader on 3 way rigs when you're bank fishing is just a nonstop headache :banghead:
Ya, it seems that when I'm getting ready to toss the line out I can see the two lines starting to twist together, then I have to wait for them to unwise and then throw out the line. So a smaller leader will help keep the lines from twisting? I saw on you tube where someone tied a sinker at the end of the line and then about a foot up grabbed a piece of line and tied the hook directly to the line using a Palomar knot and then held both parts of line from hook evenly and tied another knot to make his leader, no swivels or other lines used. Now on the carOlinda rig how does that keep your liver or stink bait off of the bottom for the catfish to take it into their mouth?

If you're using a Carolina Rig and want you bait suspended use a small float between your swivel and your hook. Look at Santee rigs online you will see different examples on how to rig it.

I've seen the video you are referring to. Nothing wrong with that if you're catching eaters, but I personally don't trust that a whole lot if you're after bigger fish. I may be wrong there, just my opinion.

Im just getting over my enthusiasm for three way rigs after spending hours untangling them.
I had some nice big three way swivels and they were incredibly strong. No signs of malformations after breaking off.
I also had some of the 180 degree as posted.
I was real big on them. My reasoning was when tight lining I had a better connection to the fish and the weight was underneath. I also liked them tight lining because I knew absolutely that my hook was off the bottom.
I drifted with them too and made sure the hook dropper was trailing while slowly letting out line.
Still I was having problems whether they occured during the fish fight or not I don't know.
I can imagine with live bait it would be much worse.
So I was recently real big on three way rigs but have reverted back to Carolina/Santee style.
I really wanted to use nothing but the three way rig but they can get into a pickle in a bad way. :biggrin1:

Three way rigs can be a pain at times that's when I just attach a sinker to the 3 way swivel. I do notice that it is harder to get the tangles out with braid. I don't drift but could see that the ball chain swivels https://bottomdwellerstackle.com/product/size10-ball-chain-fishing-swivels/ could help with the tangles.
