I have to go with the ever so reliable gills! Their free, plentiful, easy to catch and almost always produce fish for me.

I voted for the gills. Easy to catch and very effective on those flats. I really prefer the Green Sunfish when I can get them.

I love using live gills or live shad, anything live...Although I did catch PB on frozen shad, I would still rather have live bait for Flatheads.

Any type of live sunfish. About the only thing I can (semi)reliabably catch.

Live gill or sunfish on one hook and one freshly killed and peppered with the fillet knife to bleed on the other hook. If there are a lot of trees just the live one so the other hook won't snag when bringing them in. I have caught some on the bleeder instead of the live one. :eek:oooh:

With the set up I have now Bucket & aerator I can only keep the best bait ever, alive for maybe 30 minutes when the water is under 70 degrees. So for spring and fall large shad 8 inches and up, catch many more flatheads for me than any other bait. I think they have a stronger smell than other baitfish and if you can get a hook into one before his nose turns red he will stay alive all night long. I'm sure they would work well in the summer but I cannot keep them alive from the catching point to the fishing spot right now once the water gets hot LOL.

It depends on the time of year and the body of water but lively bluegills are my favorite and fresh cut skipjack are my second.

I'm glad to see the nightcrawlers/liver section is devoid of votes lol. I spent 10 years using those two baits when I was a kid and only caught one fish near 10lbs it was a channel. Never caught a flathead on either. And no flatheads on Hotdogs either. Use live or cut fish for bait and you will catch catfish.
