Sittin here watchin the snow fall, I was wondering how my 5 year old will take to fishin. I started him bank fishin with me last year, and he seemed to really enjoy it. Any of you folks got any ideas for keeping his wandering mind focused long enough to get out again this year? With his increased energy level now, I might just have to throw him in after those cats.

what i have planned for my 3 y/o in a couple years is this.... small, cheap pole because it WILL get broke, worms, & bobber. he'll have lots of action to keep him interested and he'll catch alot of gills and such for me to use for bait.

Please keep me posted on your progress so i can see what i have to look forward to in the oh so near future.
I have 2 boys that I will get started in fishing in a couple of years. If there is any local ponds that have bluegill, crappie or bullheads, that's where I would take them. Thanks 4 the post!!
If you take him fishing, he will naturally run around like a madman during
the day, but if you light a fire 10 ft behind you on a sandbar in the river
at night he is more or less yours for the night if you explain to him about
your every step being a warning to Mr. Whiskers. Set up a chair for him
near his pole and talk quiet to him about anything while you both watch
rod tips for a spell. If you catch a couple of cats, he will get the idea.
Sitting and waiting have a point to it then. A.D.D. my giddy aunt Ethyl!
Layin' in ambush is in his blood for ten thousand years back for true.
mangina, take that lil crumb snatcher out to shawnee, over by the sailboats is an L shaped dock always loaded with lots of sunfish.i take mine there and they have a blast.or pretty much any ol farm pond (im sure you know where alot of those are:smile2:)has bluegill, they are easy to catch and keep em interested
Thanks for the ideas peeps. Last year I put a little trout hook on a piece of line and tied it to his wrist and showed him how to catch me some bait on the rocks. But the warden came around and gave me a warning ticket, citing me for too many poles in the water. I had two real lines in, and his string made three. Not legal out at Osage State Lake. At least Barney didn't make me pay anything. I like that fire idea. All of us seem to be attracted to bright and shiny things. Just like the fish.
I have a 4 yr old and i always take some toys for him to play with. That way if he gets bored he can play with his cars and such. I always try to make it fun for him. Take stuff that mamma wont let him have much of to snack on. What Thor said get a cheap pole cause it will get broke. We are already working on pole number three. One is in the lake on the bottom all i could do was laugh because of the look on his face. My boy caught his first trout this year and it weighed about 2lbs nice rainbow. Now anytime i go fishing i take him along cause if i dont i am in trouble. I wouldnt have it any other way though. They will push your nerves but in the end it is all worth it. I have a blast and all my friends enjoy him going to. Hope this will help you out. Shawn
oh yeah, its definately worth it. my oldest son is 11 now and has been fishing w/ me since he's been 4 every now & then, 6 is when he started to go bout every time. when i went to the first parent teacher conferance at his school this yer it gave me a proud moment. instead of hearing about his schooling i mostly heard about his outdoor adventures. his teachern told me how he tries to teach them & other students about catfishin and huntin. although it may not seem like it, they do listen to ya. they may not apply what ya taught em right then but guarenteed it will come up somewhere other than the fishin bank.
