Im looking at a boat with a 75hsp Merc. motor. Nice looking boat that needs some tlc. OH this is a ?? deck boat aprox. 17ft with a center console.
First story was that the motor was serv. last year but now its been at least 3. Tanks and fuel line were left with gas in them so I know about this. I am asking for him to clean them and start motor.
What other things should I be looking at?

soft spots in the floor, transom rot, you should be able tu put all of your knee weight onto the lower unit and not see the transom move

a fairly strong compression test. If its low of compression, you have problems - like a possible rebuild.

If the boat looks solid to you, and you decide to purchase it, expect to do a cleaning/rebuild of the carbs and a water pump replacement. I would'nt even crank the engine till it had a new w/pump installed.
