The earliest I have tried is mid April with not much sucess. I would try sour baits, stink bait and dead minnows let me know how you do.

I have caught em ice fishing on petenwell pretty regularly with minnows while fishing for eyes... most times end up with more cats than eyes.

The Flatheads become active at a water temp above 55. Find a sourse online for the local water temps would be the best, most accurate way I'd guess.

I looked at my log books for the last few years and at least around Madison, Wisconsin, channel cats start running up the Yahara River in April and I start catching them pretty regular on the other side of the lake from shore from the beginning of June to the middle of July.
