I normally use a throw net on the river to get my shad from shallow pools off the main river, but I have never tried in cold weather. Do shad go away when it gets colder? If so, what bait do you use in the winter? I've tried frozen shad, but they seem to just fall apart after thawing.

I have trouble from bank in winter getting shad. They can still be had from a boat, they are usually deeper. A good fish finder really helps then. I usually fish with frozen skipjack in winter time.

This year they dont seem to be where they were the past 2 winters. I dont know if the water isnt cold enough yet to put them in the deep holes or they just changed their behavior. But so far it is hard to find them in the Missouri.
