Mike first you would want to inquire into your States Regulations to see if using a Channel Catfish for bait is legal. In most states, using a gamefish as bait is illegal. I'm unsure about your state. If it is legal, I'd bet a flathead would certainly eat them. I'd say a 4inch bluegill would make a great Flathead Bait. Thats about the average size we use in Missouri and the Flatheads love them.

Even crazier is that in some states its illegal to use BlueGill for bait!! I think we have a really weird rule whereas we can use bluegill for bait if we caught it on pole or line, but cant use it if we catch it in a throw net. Something to that effect anyhow. There is some crazy laws out there for sure.

Over the years I've caught some nice Flatties on those small gills when I couldn't get the bigger ones. When their hungry, size doesn't matter!
About the using of Channels, its perfectly legal in Ohio. I use smaller ones than those usually. I also carry an OH fishing license mainly because on this side of the Ohio River I can't use Trout heads or any Gamefish as bait. In Ohio, as long as its caught by R&R you can. Also I live a little over 2 miles from being in OH.
As for hooking them, do a search on here about using a Stinger Hook or try Wildwolf's 2 Hook Rigs. Gene is a sponsor, A heck of a guy and they work great for those large baits.
Cuz is 100% correct, there are some crazy laws in the states!!!!!:confused2:

you will catch more on smaller gills u limit yourself to big fish with big baits that may not bite that often
