this is probably a dumb question but i'm new to live bait fishing in fresh water.i have a kayak but can't throw a net from it. most lakes around me are the highland reservoir types. i see big balls of baitfish on my depth finder but they are usually in deep water.i have thought of chumming sour corn in the shallows then throwing the net there. any ideas?
    thanks and good luck

Do you have any damns near by? This would be a good place to catch shad. Also check the shallow water near the banks, and along rip rap. And also generator plants that use water to cool the turbines, the outcoming warm water will have them in it.

Look for concrete walls with a current running alongside. There seems to be something about that combination that attracts shad. If you consistently go after deep schools of shad in open water, you may want to think about getting a cast net with more lead around the edge so it will sink faster.
