Late July we had a seven Flathead night on the Mississippi, followed up by a two flathead nighton the 3rd of July and nothing since. We have been fishing wood, sand, rocks, depth, current, shallows, and have had no luck. Has anyone else had any luck in the last two weeks? Anyone else from around the LaCrosse area?
I think they have been spawning. The Flathead fishing has been terrible for a few weeks. The only one I have caught was in two feet of water near a beaver hut. This was not anywhere near normal flathead habitat. Maybe we should try noodling.
I have always had a hard time catching flatheads in this area during early July. We should start seeing some males with big rubs that have just come off a nest.
I Also Fish in the Lacrosse area & have been out three times & no flatheads yet 2 real nice nights on chanels but no flats wish i new why also i have a buddy thats comming next weeknd the 22nd from far away just 2 catch a flathead i hope i can put him on one last yr at this time i Had four of them in the spot i go any advice to help me out it would be very Helpful. Thx Phat Kat.
I also think the spawn has had a big impact on finding Flatheads, the little luck we have had was all in HEAVY timber. We have been trying everything from deep water, drop offs, shallow(2'-6'), rocks, current, slackwater ect and the only bite action at all was in the nastiest fallen trees you can imagine. We go out ready to loose hooks and sinkers lately. Good luck to all and hopefully they will start biting again VERY soon.
Thanks for the spawn info iam very new 2 catfishing just stared last yr & have alot 2 learn but willing 2 take any advice i can get to make me a better flathead or chanel cat fisher man i just enjoy being out fishing.
Went out again last night from 6pm-2:30am and we only got one channel, the flats skunked us again. I am left standing here scratching my head. Out of ideas now.
Finally ended the cold streak for the flatheads. Went out last night and could a couple four pounders at about 8pm and a 13 pounder at about 11pm. Lets hope this means the bite is back on.
Went out sat night from 5pm till midnight all we caught was 4 chanel cats & there were 5 of us fishing from the bank Going again tonight The water is way up & the weeds were very bad Good Luck 2 everyone.:frown:
My brother in law boated an 8 pound flat last night and we also landed five channels from 1 pound to 6.8 pounds. Good productive night. I think while flathead fishing i might start to throw some secret 7 stink bait out more often to keep me busy between flatheads, those channels seems to bite everywhere.
Finally the Flats are biting! We caught four flats weighing 18.3,12,10, and four pounds and one channel last night and they were all in heavy current. All were caught on live gills and hammered the poles like a ton of bricks. Even with the high water and current fishing is great. Can't wait for conditions to get back to normal.
Been out three times in the last to weeks was on the Black & Mississippi River One bite on a gill & My friend missed it gill was gone But it hit hard. Some channels thoe on & Off One 30incher that was nice. Thanks for the curent tip.
fishing has been great with the water dropping steadily. Biggest this week was a 28.5 pounder and a couple in the teens. Lots of action though. Good luck.
Nice to see local chatter i fish Trempealeau n Dresbach. Good luck with channels buy not much to talk about for flats. Ive been in the backwaters with live n cut gills. Creek chubs live n cut have been the best. Tried lots of stink but little action. Goin this weekend n thursday let u guys know.
Yeah it is always nice to hear how everybody else is doing and how they are catching them. I havent chased channels much lately but last night my buddy and I went out to fish wing dams and he boated four flats weighing five, six, 12.5, and 14 pounds. another friend hit up one of my other spots in his boat and he boated a 38 pounder. The best part was when he was so excited because he is so new to the sport, he is hooked for life now! Heading out again tonight to look for my 40 pounder. Good luck guys and keep up on the chatter, hopefully we can all help each other out.
Went out south of Tremp. saturday night and boated 3 flats all between 10 and 15lbs. Would have done a little better but lost a few(3), and we ran out of live bluegills. We had alot of action. It was still alot of fun, hopefully going out wednesday for some more. Will be trying by Fountain City. Good luck everyone.
Cully, your friend with the 38 pounder. Did he catch it near dresbach? In a flatbottom? Using sunfish? Fight it a long time? Have another boat show up with a larger net? If so I watched him fight that thing for what felt like eternity!! Nice fish!!
Dairycat that area south of Trempealeau can be good. I haven't been up there this year but last year I went up there and fished one afternoon. Caught five fish fast I think they were around 30, 27, 22, and a few small ones.
That 38 came further down near LaCrosse actually. He has Sea Ark and landed it by hand. Another friend caught a 39 pounder tonight. I always say I am going to spend more time fishing right below the dam but get side tracked at other spots and rarely make it that far north. I have actually never had a bite up there. I fish out of an 18 foot polarcraft with an Evinrude on the back. The side of the boat reads "Overkill", if you ever see me out there stop in and say hi. Usually fishing between the black river and north end of Goose Island as we usually lauch behind Gunderson on Seventh St. landing. What is the best way to fish below the dam? Anchor and longline or drift fish it? The Fatty Flatties are biting now so probably heading back out Wed night. Good luck to all.
