I have never fished for flatheads in the winter time, but have caught them in the spring as teh water temp crosses over 55 degrees, when it hits 60 they really turn on. I would guess that the reverse is true in early stages of winter.

I have caught flatheads clear up to Christmas here in Ohio, if we have a warm fall.

When the water drops below 50 deg. the bite slows drastically

My last flathead caught in 2007 was on November 3.

You can catch channels in cold water though.

And of course, wintertime is the best time for blues.

i dont have any facts or sienctific data to back up my thery but i think flats feed on big baits fast and heavy till the water temp.starts to drop.i beleive they start toneing down and eating smaller baits and more streamlined like chubs, suckers, and small bass or cats.
