Heads and middles produce about the same for me.

the cat in my signature was caught with a head. i am trying to lay it in my coleman 48 qt. cooler. in the boat, i use both. put the head on one pole, and sides on the other one. off the bank, definitely the head- you can cast it like you are trying to hit a homerun.

I will use a 6" shad whole as long as it is fresh!!! Just cut the tail off right at the end and let it bleed.

Have used the whole shad if it is small enough. For bigger shad, the head or the middle with the guts produces the best for me. As far as the tail goes, I can't say I have ever caught anything on them. I usually cut the shad right below the gills when I use the head.

For shad, I like the middle part, right behind the head, with the gut pocket included.

I cut off the head and use it and then take a nice chunk of mid section and use it

I will have to say that every piece of cut shad i have thrown out i have caught something on.

So to me it does not matter head, middle, tail...they all work for me.

I usually cut off the tail to open the gut pocket and let the shad bleed out.

Yep I'm another vote for head. With middle gut part coming in a close second. I thought about writing a little humorous comment here, but I'll refrain.

I cut my shad into thirds and then put the whole shad on the hook. If I had to choose only 1 piece it would be the middle with the gut pocket.

For me it depends on the size of the fish I am going for. If I want big ones I will take the whole shad cut off the tail fin, make a cut down each side to let some more scent out, then hook it through the eye sockets. For smaller cats I will cut it up and I prefer the head, last a lot longer than the middle section.
