When I first started cattin I only had a couple of rods. Now, it seems i feel the need to have a rod for every situation i may face...I have long surf rods for bank fishing a few places, other rods spec. for channels..etc. you get the idea. Is this just an excuse to fuel my addiction? My wife thinks so.. I also have rods i like for the different types of baits I use and how I rig them..Example...i have a med/hev action st.croix about 8 ft. in length. It has some tip, but plenty of backbone where it is needed. I use j-style and circle hooks. On this rod i like to use the circles because of the tip, so the fish can load up on it before, he hits the core and it breaks his neck.lol Anyways, just want to know what is your fav. rods and do you guys do the same?...rollo

Ugly Stik Catfish Rods are the only rods I will use. They are hard to find sometimes.Shakspeare Tide Water reels are what I use to crank the biguns in.

i guess the question i should have asked is ,do you consider what rods your going to use in advance.. i consider what kind of bait im going to have for the night, the size of the bait, the area im heading out to fish, and how im going to fish the baits in that area. thats when i decide what poles to take for the trip. just wondering if im getting too critical, or if others do this. I have a fishing buddy that thinks im crazy for having different poles..he owns 3 outfits and uses them for every situation.

    Dear Brother Jason;
I have two 8' Shakespeare Ugly Stiks heavy actions. One for me and one for my wife.
A 10' medium heavy action for my wife and 15' Surf Rod for bank fishing on the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers. A custom 8'+ Rod for "Monster Blues World Record" just to see how a custom rod that costs $400 would do compared to a Shakespeare Ugly Stik. Save your money and stay with the Ugly Stiks or other well made factory rod for less money!! As far as I am concerned, I WASTED $400.00!!
In the next month or two I will add another 10' and 12' to my Catfish arsenal then call the rod part of the setup complete.
I have two high end Spinning Reels with 2+ extra spools for each that are loaded with different lines for different conditions, et al.
And, I have several other Rods and reels for other types of fish such as Bass so I can have some cheap bait to use!
Now, having said all of that I must also tell you that all of this equipment is for me AND MY WIFE TOO!:smile2: :smile2: We are a team no matter if it's Fishing, Hunting/Shooting/Reloading [yes we have more firearms than rods!:smile2: ] for our various firearms, working out, walking, or just spending QUALITY time TOGETHER.
Perhaps, and I am guessing here, but perhaps, your wife is complaining about the rods and all because she is wanting to go with you on some of your fishing outings from time to time just to get out of the house too??
Another reason she might be complaining is this; When was the last time she got something? How many times have you gotten what you wanted because she gave in???? Maybe she would like to have a little something too??
Like I said, I am guessing here but I can tell you this much.
In my case, My Wife is also My Partner, Soul Mate, Wife, Hunting Buddy, Fishing Buddy, Best Friend, One and Only Lover, sometimes chef, ect, ect.
If my wife sees a gun that she wants, or a reel/rod, ect, I make sure that somehow, some way, she gets it even if I have to do without something else that I might want!
You see, I am the luckiest man in the world! My Mate; Raven does not ask for much, never has either. What little she asks for I always end up getting back many times over!:smile2:
And I will tell you something else. You treat your Mate right, and you might end up needing some of those pills in those Viagra/Celebrex commercials! :smile2: Nuff Said on that subject!
But to strictly answering your question, Yes, I have more than one rod for each species of game fish that I am after.
Hope this helps you. If I may be of further help please do not hesitate to contact me further or one of the other Brother's or Sister's as they too will help you as best they can! :smile2:
    Fraternally,
    Coyote1 and Raven

    Jason,
If your crazy so am I. I do the same thing. Sometimes you need different rod and reel combos for different baits and different conditions or situations. Sometimes you need power and sometimes you need finesse. I can tell you this, it's easier to cast out to the current break at a dam with a long rod. Why limit yourself?

I too have a plethora or different rods for all different occasions but for cats I use almost exclusively a St.Croix wild River 11'6" light power moderate action cork handle (with the slip-rings) paired with a rear-drag Shimano Symetre with trilene "red box" 6-8# test line.
We only have Channelcats and bullheads for the most part though. Works great! I know it's a salmon type rod but it's light and VERY sensitive so I can throw it all day with minimal wear-n-tear on the ol body and it can be replaced free of charge if absolutely anything (your fault-my fault warantee) happens to it! I love it!

For channel I use my berkley lightning rods which came as a combo with the Garcia 6000. For river fishing i use the ugly stix. Best rods out there imho.

I'm not sure if I have a favorite rod, but I do love my Tiger rods--got 1 that is 11' and 1 that is 7' long for spinning both medium action, also got 2 MH and 1 Medium action for my baitcasters. I also have a 6'6" boat rod rated at 20-50 lb. test made by ugly stick, and a white uglystick catfish rod made by ugly stick. I also have a berkley big game rod, 7' offshore angler power stick, power plus trophy class rod and some old ocean city salt water rods that are heavy duty.
