Shad or live perch. Shad much easier for me to get, but perch seem to produce larger blues.

Shad, alive or cut in current near deep water. If I use cut bait I use the head or chunks 3 or 4 inches square or sides, throw away the tail. Good luck

Whole bluegill with the top half of the tail cut-makes it swim injured and up not under hang ups- on a tightline,or chicken liver -tightline in current-bobber in calm water.I'll also roughup the scales on one side of the bluegill releases oil-all this injures the bait without killing it,that way it swims around call'n them in.I've also caught flattys and striper fishing these ways.

For big blues I like the biggest head off the biggest shad or skip jack I can find with alittle bit of the gut pocket still attached. Run a 10/0 King Khale through one eye and out the other and hang on when you get a bite on this bait it will be a big fish. 777

SKIPJACK HERRING!!!!!! Best bait for big blues at least in this section of the country. Fresh caught Shad would be second.

I have to agree with the biggest shad head in the cooler. Rig it on a 3-way rig with a good long lead on the bait part of the three-way. Pitch it off the tip of the right wing dike on the Missouri river. Lodge the butt of the rod in the rocks, or lose the rod!

Cut shad, the front half has worked alot better than the back half for me.

Without a doubt, to me, there are two critical elements for Blues -

Swift Water and whole small Perch(preferreably) or Shad. Deadly combination

Give me a shad about 10 inches long, cut the little tail off, and divide that into two sections. If i can't find a shad that big, a bream will work in a jiff. Whatever the bait, its gotta be at least the size of a cigarette box for me to even think about using it.
