whats the difference

    whats the difference between a 85 hp and a 115 hp jonhson is it just the carbs or bore or timeing . i just bought a 115 powerhead to put on it just wondering if all the parts on the 85 is the same thanks

    What are the years on the 85 and the 115.

    the 85 is a 1974 and the 115 is a 1973

    i know from 73 to 77 is the same wondering if the pistons is the same size and if there the same what makes it a 115

    Will be a little difference in the gears in the lower unit but the top is pretty well all the same except the jets in the carbs. The 85 should have 28 jets and the 115 should have 30 in them


    Also look at the back and see if it has the flat cooling plate or the bubble back.

    is a flat back so should i change the bottom end to i have a spare thats off a 115

    Naw you can run either lower unit you want on it. There ain't enough difference in the to make any thing worth while. If you are going to run the 115 top end then you need to keep the carbs the same as a 115 or if you don't have the carbs on the 115 the change the reed valves and install the 85 reed valves and carbs.

    i bought it complete with everything just bolt it on and its ready to run supposed to have 125 lb comp on all cyl iwas going to rebuild mine but i bought this 115 cheaper than i could rebuild mine
