I like red breasted sunfish about 10" long. My grand dad would roll over in his grave to know I use them for bait instead of eating them..:smile2:

Any thing I catch is fare game, but I prefer small mouth bass.Blue gill would be next on my list I can have more of them in the old bait basket.

A nice healthy/lively bluegill is my #1 bait of choice in the sunfish family.

Next would be the green sunfish.

    Then the smallmouth bass.

I had the best luck last year on big gills in the spring and red breasts in the fall.

I usually use warmouths and rock bass as my 1st choice, then bluegills. This year tho, I think I'm gonna try more smallmouth bass as well as live shad after I build a round bait tank.

i like warmouths as my first bait in the sunfish family.i don't like regular old lake bluegills, unless they are a good size, seems like they can die too easily.

i would say my number one bait is yellow bellies from 6 inches to at least 9 or ten.i used onethat was about 12 inches long once, got a heck of a run on it,i hooked him too deep.i never tried to set the hook as hard aas i did that day,but i couldn't rip the hook out of its back to set it,lol
that belly lasted for two days after getting hammered.

I would have to say that the warmouth is my bait of choice from the sunfish family. They are getting harder are gettting harder and harder to find though.

warmouths by far, that is one tough lil fish and man do they get poed when hooked LOL, after them in no particular order: Gills of all kinds, Creek Chubs, Sucker, Shad, Yellows, Shiners, and anything else that is very abundant in the water im fishing, sometimes ill use the occassional gold fish.

the bait holes i use are very abundant with war mouths plus the one place i fish alot is very abundant with warmouth and is one of the primary food sources for the cats.

There are all kinds of names for them here in MO., But I like the ones with the big mouth(I call them Green sunfish) they stay alive in the Missouri river current a lot longer then what I call blue gill (real thin with a small mouth). If its 3-4 inch's long,Big Mouth and a Blue/Green lightning bolt under the eye and you have flathead gold!!!!!!!!!
