I have been using braid for around 2 years now and it took a while to get use to fishing with braid cause it is tottally different feel from mono in every way possible. It is easier to break braid than mono of half its size. There is zero stretch so just wrap it around the reel and give it a quick snap and it breaks loose or the whole limb will come up with it. I will say ALWAYS use a mono leader, or fluorocarbon, leader.

Once again, I guess I will continue, at least this year with what has worked for years for me with the mono. However, we all should have sense enough to realize that there is good, better and best for all situations in life. If I ever discover an "edge", I will certainly jump on it. I see valid points for both types of line. Still a catch 22 any way you look at it! :) I LOVE this site and all the great and informative replies! Thanks for all you folks!

Rivercatsc: thought you were going to Winyah Bay today. Too windy?

I just had a brainstorm. Perhaps I will get some braided line and just spool up ONE reel with it to see how I like it. I remember dad used a black braided line for bass fishin' back in the late '50s and '60s. That was some stout line!

If you ever need a crew member to go, just holler. I am very flexible and will fish any weather that's humanly tolerable! :) I've never fished Winyah Bay, and would love to see it sometime.

"...Is there anything anyone has AGAINST steel leaders other than the higher cost..."

It would be a pain and slow process to do the rigging since I use circle hooks. Wire does kink, and once kined it is more susceptible to breaking.

Plus, at what point do we just have to say enough already!! We are catching mostly 5-10 pound catfish, some 10-40 pound fish, and an occasional 50-70 pounder. I know offshore guys that are catching 75-200 pound tuna on 20-30 pound mono. Heck, I know guys that are landing 200-500 pound sharks on 80 pound Power Pro.

I just think it is total overkill and a waste of time and money to use these super duper sized lines and leaders.

The truth is that most people are just wanting to try something new, spend some money, and have a good reason to go fishing so they can try out their new stuff. Do they really need it? Probably not, but if it excites you into having a good time, gives you a reason to hang out at the tackle store, stare out the window waiting for UPS to arrive, and enjoy the water then I guess it ain't that bad. :smile2:
