Caught by my fishing buddy two weeks ago on the James.

I've never seen a cat that looked like this. We were going after blues, but this one has a more rounded rear fin. All the other James River blues we've caught have fins that resemble a comb. Also, his head was oddly shaped, you can notice the long bulges that run from his body to the top of his spear shaped head. Aside from the bulges, the rest of his head was actually fairly wide and flat. And just behind the head on each side, I guess you can call it the neck, was very muscular on both sides, bulging.

I've never seen a catfish this size so feisty and fight so hard (came in just under 5 lbs). He got near the surface, and took a dive. I've never had a cat shake my grip once I grab their head, this guy did it twice. Powerful little sucker. And he was super dark, that's not a shadow on him in the pic.

My guess would be a channel, just based on the fin. But he really doesn't look like anything I've caught before. I wish I took more pics.

Let me know what you all think, me and my buddy are curious to know.

Male channel in spawning condition. During the spawn their heads get that sort of swolen look and they turn dark grey to black.

Definitely a male Channel. They get dark and their heads get all swelled up like that during the spawn. I don't know how long it takes for them to look normal again. When I was inexperienced here in central Ohio we used to think that they were Blues! lol

Awesome to know! Thanks guys. I guess him being in spawning/nest protection mode would explain why he was so feisty.
