i caught this fish last fall and had to take a piture of it. it looks almost like a flat/channel halfbreed. the fish was very healthy and did not seem to be sick at all. took it forever to calm down in the boat for me to take a pic. it had a channel body but had a very flat head for a channel and bore markings of a flathead. just wondering if anyone has seen anything like this.

I pretty sure its a channel. Here's why the tail fin is forked and on a flathead its not. The anal fin is curved and blues are straight. I think its just an ugly channel

Man that is something..It also looks to me like a flat channel cross, it has the forked tail of a channel, but the colorings resemble somewhat of a flathead.

Maybe we can get Environmentor to comment on this one. Ron would be way more qualified than the rest of us. I'll PM him.

I agree that it's a channel, but the coloring is unusual for sure ?

Dinkbuster, you have yourself a channel cat with a pigment abnormality, similar to the one Michael Jackson has. LOL I've seen it a time or two and only on channels. Vern

Dinkbuster looks to me like what we used to call around here a speckled catfish, ihavent seen any in years though. ugly little things and they put up one heck of a fight when you catch them. they still eat teh same though you can be for sure that where you caught that little one there are some bigger ones around there somewhere.

I'm going with Channel Cat that has unique coloration. It has a forked tail so that eliminates flathead or bullhead plus the top jaw sticks out further than the bottom jaw unlike the flattie who's bottom jaw sticks out further than the top.

the first picture made it look like a channel with a wierd mutation in its pigmentation (don't worry not contagious and shouldn't be harmful) but when you look at the second shot it looks like its got the head of not a flathead catfish but rather one of the Amazonian catfish like the redtails or another one i can't think of its name though... they have a very flattened and elongated head like that...

If you kept it you should have taken it to DNR to see if they could help identify the fish.... and don't just let them take one look at it and tell you what it is... with that coloration and structure they should examine it a bit more...

I found this in a catfish book. Brown Bullhead. Coloration looks similar.

Well, I would have gone with the brown bullhead too except for the fork in its tail. The fork is really too deep for any type of bullhead, or a flathead for that matter. I dunno. You may have a speckled cat like bamacats said.

that is what you call a Half and half. lol I thank it is half Channel and half Brown Bullhead. I seen some stranger crosses than that in my lifetime. Just the other day someone was talkin about half crappie and half bass. I thank anythang is possible.
