I'm curious of what is the largest bait used to catch flatheads and how big was the fish. I caught 30# flattie with 3# live carp. It could barely fit in it's mouth.

I once tried to use the smallest carp I could get my hands on around 5 lbs. It didn't work that well!

But I love using legal sized largemouth and smallmouth bass! Flatheads love them!:cool2:

The biggest I,ve used is about 18 inches.I keep some bigger hooks,12/0 and up in case I get some bigger bait than that though.I keep a few 20 oz sinkers in the van to so I can anchor them down.I always like one rod out with the biggest bait I got on it,sometimes it pays off, sometimes it don,t.:eek:oooh:

I've used 10'' to 15'' bullheads and not done too bad on. tried a 10'' walley once that had been dead for awhile didn't have any luck on it though.

I have to say that i don't use anything over 4 in because thats all i think i need my buddy bryce (1 4 fishing) uses big bait and we normally have the same results so it dont bother me about the big bait big fish saying. Again everyone has their own point of view.

Just started using these and have been unsuccessful thus far, but small channel cats around 13", give or take a couple inches. Still waiting on the biggun to come around and eat 'em. should i be clipping the fins?

i feel like if the baits to big you loose hookup ratio,so i dont go over hand size live bait

MY biggest bait I have used is a 10" bullhead. My 11 year old brother used an 8 inch bluegill once. Cut the throat while it was still alive and let it bleed out in the water. He caught a 41 pound blue on it.

yep, in the fall i use larger baits (hand size) and in the spring i've had better luck with smaller 4-5 inch baits, alot of times the bigger baits would just get carried and picked at, i try and focus on how lively a bait is, i'd rather use a lively smaller bait than a big lazy bait.

How in the hell do you cast a bait that big?
And what size hooks are you using?
    Where do you hook them?

8 inch shad and had no luck so I tend to stick to 4 or 5 inch shad . Otherwise It becomes cut bait .

I usually use gills 4-8 inches long but I've seen people thrown out gills that were so big they were setting their clicker off.:confused2:
