I fish at this pond and I usually use 3 or 4/0 hooks, but the bluegill just fall to the bottom and die. I have 18 to 24 inches of leader. I usually hook it through the back. Should I hook it through the mouth instead? Should I use a different hook?

a 3 or 4/0 hook will generally cause a small perch or shiner to lay over on its side and die.use a smaller hook and a bobber or hook just behind and below the anal fin.

I hook mine through the mouth. hook through top lip right behind the nostrils in the bony part of the mouth. don't hook through both lips or they will drown since they need their mouth open to breathe. I use up to a 6/0 with no problems. if they die just use them as cut bait.

A lot of times your bait will die because you're fishing below the thermocline. Try fishing shallower next time especially during the summer months.
