It depends on what type of fish you are going after and how big they are. A good starting point would be to look at an ugly stik catfish rod.

Ugly Stik Tiger then. It's a bit more pricey, but those things are tough as nails.

The Ugly Tiger Sticks are great for around $50-60. For 20-30, I like the 7' Ugly Stick one-piece rods at Wall mart. (Black medium action with the yellow stripes). Never really cared for the white ones.

I was going to buy a MH surge rod, but they broke the mold and won't have anymore for about 3 months. I'm on a waiting list as of now.

Eric how sensitive is the tip? I've heard only good things?

I've also got an 8' Abu Garcia Brute rod thats pretty sweet.I haven't hooked into anything big with it yet so I can't say how it performs, but it looks great!!! I've heard great things about the ugly stiks also.

Mine is the heavy but it's still pretty sensitive. My buddy has the m/h & seems to like it really well.
Do you ever get down this way? If so, go to Butch's Sports World over in Palmyra they have them for something like $59.00

    Eric,

Have you compared them to the Ugly Tiger rods which are about in the same price range?

No, i'm sorry I haven't. I'm sure someone could give you a comparison. Maybe start a new thread called Surge vs Tiger what's your take?

I would say that 6500 would be a little small for the bigger tiger rods, i think a 7' ugly cat is got to be one of the best polls for the money you can get and a perfict match for the 6500 and ya can cast the thing a mile. pulled in a 38 lb flat in with mine with 6501c3 on it with no problem at all, think it would hold up to a 60lber, anyway the poll not sure about the reel

7ft ugly stik tiger medium action, or 7ft ugly stik catfish rod m/h action.

I have both a surge and a tiger. I myself like the surge a little better. It has a very sensitive tip with a heck of a backbone. I don't think you can go wrong with either one. They both are great rods. The surge is also a little longer it is 7'10" and the tiger is 7'. They both have stainless eyes which I love. I have had lots of problems with ceramic. The surge has 11 eyes and the tiger has 9. Either one is a good choice but the surge imo is better.

I'd say a catfish ugle stik wal-mart 8 foot about 35 bucks for that price you just can't beat them.
