I think you are looking at the Penn senator reels, I have never seen a 209 with red side plates and if there are PLEASE send me a link to where you found them for I am very interested!

I think some of the older peen 209s were a burnt red color. These were good reels.

The pen i have is an old 209 with the burnt red sideplates, I rarely use it and know nothing about itexcept its a fairly big reel with a lot of power.

I have two penn 209s that are close to ten yrs. old and they are black. They
are good reels just remember unlike an ambassaduer you can take up slack
with them in free spool be sure to engage the lever before setting the hook.
If you don't you will have a mess. Been there-- done that.

My 9M, 209 and 309 all have red side plates. Now alll 3 of them are over 25 years old but rarely used. I still prefer using my Mitchell open face spinning reels.

I've got 209's and 309's in black and red. The older ones were the red color. There were actually 2 different reds, one bright, one not so bright... The jigmasters and other reels came in both shades of red, and later in black... I really like the look of the old red Penn reels... Some other old Penns, like an 85 I have, came in a true brown color...

The original color of 209's were a brownish type then a maroon like in the 60's brighter red in middle 70's thru 80's and black in 90's to present.
