I was just wondering what bow everyone shoots or hunts with. I know it is probably a little early but I am looking forward to going this year. I didn't get to do a whole lot of bowhunting last year. Anyway, I shoot a weighted solo-cam camo Clearwater Archery bow. I think it was the last model they made before they went out of business.

Started getting ready for the season. I just put new strings on my PSE Bowmadness XL, now I'm ready to go. I should get drawn this year for some of those elusive Iowa bow tags, I can't wait for the first week of November. The moon should be good so bring it on, I'm ready already!!!

Mathews MQ 32 and Mathews Outback. Carbon arrows and going to the ABC Pivitol sight. Every year I try some different broadheads, but keep coming back to Muzzys. MX 4 100 gr. The Rage 2 blade is a great head if you get it in the right spot, but if not, not much penetration. At least that is my experience. It sure gets lots of airtime on tv.

I was shooting a Bear Grizzly Supreme('95?) 48#, 31" 2117's with Muzzy 100gr. 4 blades and a Whisker Biscuit. Switched last year to the Viper Venom 100gr.(awesome head!) and Ive been shooting a new bow this summer for the fall. Razor's Edge by Diamond. Shooting carbon arrows for the first time too and so far I dont like them. Im hearing more and more people complain about no penetration with the Rage's. Glad I didnt jump on that bandwagon. Im still a Muzzy fan but I have a personal problem with one of their spokesmen so I dont patronize their company anymore. Ive killed a lot of deer etc with Muzzy's over the last 15 or so years. I shoot a few recurves and stickbows but quit hunting with them for now as I dont have the time to invest in an hour or so everyday shooting them. We fish alot but its just something to do inbeween bow season's I think?

I'm just curious as to what you don't like about carbon arrows? I would never go back to aluminum arrows.
I shoot a Bowtech Allegiance, it's too smooth and accurate for me to upgrade. I've got Maxima's with Slick Tricks in the quiver, but might be changing arrows this year. No reason really, I just tend to try new stuff all the time :) Probably switching from Easton Tracer nocks to Firenocks too...

I used to shoot a Howard Hill Tembo 65lbs. clear glass. I sold it a couple years ago. I'm going to buy another one when I get my boat finished. 45lbs @27 inches. I think a bamboo long bow shooting wood arrows is about as cool as it gets. Just my 2 cents. Todd

They fly fine but I dont think theyre hitting as hard or with as much penetration as my old aluminum ones. Ive got more speed with them but speed isnt everything, Ive gained about 45-50 fps over my old rig with aluminum's. My knockoff block target is still in good shape and with aluminum my arrows were 3/4 the way thru it. With carbons and even with their smaller diameter they only go in about 1/4-1/3 tops and dont even sound like they are hitting it hard.

Are you sure you have the right spine arrows and that they're not hitting the rest and wobbling? I had a similar problem years ago that turned out I had the wrong spine arrows. I was using what the chart said but I couldn't get them tuned and they would stick in the target at different angles. The whole "speed vs weight" thing is complicated, but if you gained 50 fps, you should at least have the same penetration. Something sounds goofy here. If you had the actual arrow weights and speeds for each one we could figure it out mathematcally...

I havent looked at them lately as far as numbers on the shafts but the proshop set it up for me. They fly fine like I said but the penetration just isnt there? I shot the bear today beside it for comparison and my nephew even commented on it. Aluminum's out of the Bear only had the fletching plus 3 or 4" sticking out and carbons had 1/2 the arrow. The 2117's are set up for 31" draw with up to 55lbs I believe so I may switch the new bow back to aluminum. I shot both bows/setups with the Viper broadheads today too and a penetration difference with broadheads was still obvious. Whether shooting wood, fiberglass or aluminum Ive always preferred a "stiffer" arrow with a little more weight then the "norm". Bear with aluminums was shooting in the 240's and the Diamond with carbons was cranking them out at 285-295. So 45-55 FPS faster.

I've hunted with compound bows ever since they first came out. 3 years ago I went to upgrade my setup and was so overwhelmed by how complicated it had become I completely changed directions. I now hunt with either a Bear Montana longbow, 50#, or a Martin X-200 recurve, 55#. Shoot both of them off the shelf, bare bow. I've got nothing against anyone that wants the highest tech, wheels and cams and all the other stuff, but it's just not for me anymore. I've been around 56 years and the older I get, the more the simple things appeal to me.

I wish I could help more. You definitely shouldn't see a decrease in penetration. I looked up the numbers cuz it just doesn't sound right. I used a 30" arrow length and didn't include weight for nocks, inserts, and fletching. Comparatively speaking, the 2117 would weigh 460 grains and shooting at 240fps would have 58.85 ft pounds of kinetic energy. A carbon weighing 9gpi ( about average) would have a total weight of 370 grains and shooting at 280fps would have 64.43 ft pounds. By the numbers you should have MORE penetration. I still think something is wrong. Not all shops REALLY know what they're doing. I've been to some REALLY bad ones and choose to do it all myself anymore. You might have gotten the wrong spine. They might be hitting something on the bow, they do flex differently than aluminum arrows and it's doubtful that you could see if it is hitting the rest. I just figured out the numbers because I believe you will love carbon arrows once you get this figured out. This is NOT the performance you should be getting with a correctly spined arrow that's flying the best it can. It's not carbon arrows in general that are causing you to see decreased penetration, but it may just be the set you have. I can't say for sure from here, I'm just trying to help ;)
