I would love to try eels. I wish we had them here in Ohio. (I've heard of a few in the Ohio River, but not many.)

    None that worked. :glare:

    Seriously, though.

    Crawlers
    fresh liver
    cured liver
    packaged bait
    live gill
    cut bait

I think only crawlers worked for us.

dang, h20, youve used it all havent ya? is it legal in ohio to use game fish for bait? its not here. should be though. i mean, if you catch the fish you should be able to do whatever you want with it.

Yes here in Ohio, if it was legally caught on HOOK & LINE you can use it (as long as it's a legal catch)

in ohio be careful with lm and sm bass. the game warden and i had a discussion about whats legal. bass must be caught and imediately put onto the hook. dont put it in your bucket or youll get a fine. i though madtoms were endangered here in ohio and couldnt be used?

Correct, however the bass can be put on a stringer or bait bucket but they MUST meet the legal measurement requirements from that particular body of water.

For isntance, lets say I'm fishing "XYZ Lake" that has a 12 inch Bass length, but I just came from "ABC Lake/Stream/River" that doesnt have a measurement requirement, I can not take out a 10 inch largemouth from my baitcooler & use if at "XYZ Lake".... at least thats how it was explained to me by 5th District in Xenia.

I did a search on Madtoms.

There are 3 on the endangered list:

    Northern Madtom
    Moutain Madtom
    Scioto Madtom

The Scioto Madtom is thought to be extinct. The ones we catch out of our creek in Hocking County look nothing like the Northern or Mountain Madtoms. I will have to do some research into them. I dont know which kind of Madtoms that we have they are much darker looking & have much more definded spines. Our creek is a tiny creek that runs through the hills, it does eventually run into Salt Creek, which eventually runs into the Scioto.

hmm, maybe i stand corrected. im goin to call xenia to make sure. i just remembered that not all bodies of water have the same size limit. smallies rank up there with one of my favorites.

dont know what kind are in the mad river but i know a couple holes where you can burn 'em up on nitecrawlers. i dont use em cause i get stung every time i touch one. yes stung! they have a poison in their spines.

i used a selection of homemade baits:
pork steaks soaked in cherry koolaid, water and garlic salt
dough balls made from pilsbursy garlic bread dough
and chicken skin that had been soaking in garlic salt and water

caught some nice 2-5 pound channels but that was about it didnt get to go as much as i wanted but plan on tearing them up next year.

I tried Bacon, hotdogs, Grasshoppers, and doughballs from magicbait and powerbait. Execept for the grasshoppers, for the most part every thing worked.

The baits that I have used this year are, shad, as cut bait, fillet, and the guts. Skipjack, whole, cut , fillet and the guts.Blue gill. Hot dogs marinated in chicken blood. Chicken liver flavored with garlic and vanilla extract. Shrimp flavored with garlic and vanilla. Night crawlers. Green worms. Crickets. Thats all I can remember for now.
