I can't go to sleep listening to music, at least most music. I get too involved and enjoy it so much and usually want to sing along. This was one, when I was a teenager, that I COULD go to sleep to......lots of folks would say it's so sad. Guess the lyrics ARE bittersweet/melancholy, but sometimes stuff like that gives me a push that I need. I DO think the melody of this song adds a lot to it as well. If ya can't sing it in your head, you can always look it up.

Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me

    I can't light......no more of your darkness
All my pictures......seem to fade to black and white
I'm growin' tired.....and time stands still before me
Frozen here.....on the ladder of my life

Too late.....to save myself from falling
I took a chance.....and changed your way of life
But you misread.....my meaning when I met you
Closed the door......and left me blind, by the light

Don't let the sun go down on me
Although I search myself, it's always someone else I see
I'd just allow a fragment of your life.....to wander free

But losin' everything.....is like the sun goin' down on me

    I can't find.....oh the right romantic line
But see me once.....and see the way I feel
Don't discard me.....just because you think I mean you harm
But these cuts I have.....oh they need love.....to help them heal

Don't let the sun go down on me
Although I search myself, it's always someone else I see
I'd just allow a fragment of your life.....to wander free

But losin' everything......is like the sun goin' down on me

Don't let the sun.....GO down on me
Although I search myself, it's always someone else I see
I'd just allow a fragment of your life......to wander free! Yeah....

But losin' everything......is like the sun goin' down on me

Thanks Dan, I love that particular song. I think the lyrics should be attributed to Bernie Taupin though, and the music to Elton? They were/are a GREAT combo, imo.

I can see that.......never thought of Pink Floyd that way before Mike. Hmmm, always found most of their music to be depressing, but maybe it was the circumstances. I could never figure out why people who were UP and partying, would want to be DOWN. :eek:oooh:

And ya know, this IS a lyrics thread. THAT MEANS POST SOME LYRICS!!!

Leonard Cohen is a master lyricist; everything he writes gets to me.

    Suzanne
Suzanne takes you down to her place near the river
You can hear the boats go by
You can spend the night beside her
And you know that she's half crazy
But that's why you want to be there
And she feeds you tea and oranges
That come all the way from China
And just when you mean to tell her
That you have no love to give her
Then she gets you on her wavelength
And she lets the river answer
That you've always been her lover
And you want to travel with her
And you want to travel blind
And you know that she will trust you
For you've touched her perfect body with your mind.
    And Jesus was a sailor
When he walked upon the water
And he spent a long time watching
    From his lonely wooden tower
And when he knew for certain
Only drowning men could see him
He said "All men will be sailors then
Until the sea shall free them"
    But he himself was broken
Long before the sky would open
    Forsaken, almost human
He sank beneath your wisdom like a stone
And you want to travel with him
And you want to travel blind
And you think maybe you'll trust him
For he's touched your perfect body with his mind.

    Now Suzanne takes your hand
And she leads you to the river
She is wearing rags and feathers
    From Salvation Army counters
And the sun pours down like honey
On our lady of the harbour
And she shows you where to look
Among the garbage and the flowers
There are heroes in the seaweed
There are children in the morning
They are leaning out for love
And they will lean that way forever
    While Suzanne holds the mirror
And you want to travel with her
And you want to travel blind
And you know that you can trust her
For she's touched your perfect body with her mind.

    ...W

    Yeh, should posted lyrics huh...excuse me I'm slow...lol :smile2:\

    Breathe

    Breathe, breathe in the air.
    Don't be afraid to care.
    Leave but don't leave me.
Look around and choose your own ground.

Long you live and high you fly
And smiles you'll give and tears you'll cry
And all you touch and all you see
Is all your life will ever be.

    Run, rabbit run.
Dig that hole, forget the sun,
And when at last the work is done
Don't sit down it's time to dig another one.

For long you live and high you fly
But only if you ride the tide
And balanced on the biggest wave
You race towards an early grave.

    Time

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way.
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way.

Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain.
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today.
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you.
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun.

So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again.
The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older,
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death.

Every year is getting shorter never seem to find the time.
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over,
Thought I'd something more to say.

i wrote this song 2 years ago when my daughter was still an infant.

heeeey madison.....breeze blowing above your head..in your bed
sweeet silent dreams...you wake from them and you scream..in your dreams

never know just what youre trying to say.
    but i understand you anyway

bluuuue ocean eyes...who knows what they try to hide..whats inside
youuuu fly away...come back on a cloudy day

never know just what youre trying to say
    but i understand you anyway.

theres alot of instrumental parts in it. not alot of words but its about a 6 minute song.

Hello darkness, my old friend.....I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping.....left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision, that was planted in my brain - still remains
    Within the sound of silence.

In restless dreams I walk alone.....narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp....I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light - that split the night
And touched the sound of silence.

And in the naked light I saw.....ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking.....peope hearing without listening
People writing songs, that voices never share - and no one dared
    Disturb the sound of silence.

Fools said I, you do not know.....silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you.....take my arms that I might reach you
But my words, like silent raindrops fell - and echoed
    In the wells of silence.

And the people bowed and prayed.....to the neon God they made
And the sign flashed out its warning.....in the words that it was forming
And the signs said the words of the prophets are written on the subway walls - and tenement halls
And whispered in the sounds of silence.

    "the highway is alive tonight,
nobody's foolin' nobody as to where it goes,

im sittin' here by the campfire light,
with the ghost of ol tom joad..."

Everyone knows that I'm a big fan of Aerosmith, but the first time I listened to this song, it made me cry and I always say that a good musician is someone who make their listeners feel the music, and this guy surely does:

    Fly away from here
    http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=2gf107A_JOc

    Gotta find a way
Yeah I can't wait another day,
    Ain't nothin' gonna change
    If we stay around here
We gotta do what it takes
What goes on in our hands
We all make mistakes but it's never to late
To start again, take another breath
    And say another prayer,

    And fly away from here,
    Anywhere, yeah I don't care
We just fly away from here
Our hopes and dreams, areout there somewhere
I won't let time pass us by
    We just fly...

    If this life
    Gets hard enough
It aint no never mind, you've got me by your side
    And anytime you want
Yeah we can catch a train and find a better place
Cos there won't be nothin or no-one will keep getting us down

    Maybe you I
Can pack our bags and hit the sky

    And fly away from here
    Anywhere, yeah I don't care
We just fly away from here
Our hopes and dreams, are out there somewhere
I Won't let time pass us by
    We just fly..

Do you see a bluer sky now you could have a better life now
    Open your eyes
Cos no-one here can ever stop us
They can try but we won't let them
    No way...

    Maybe you and I
Could pack our bags and say goodbye...

    And fly away from here
Anywhere, now honey I don't care
We just fly away from here
Our hopes and dreams are out there somewhere
    Fly away from here,
    Yeah anywhere, now honey, I don't I don't I don't care
    We just fly....

while were on the subject of paul simon.....

    American Tune

Many's, the time I'v been mistaken
    And many times confused
    Yes, and often felt forsaken
    And certainly misused
But I'm all right, I'm all right
I'm just weary to my bones
Still, you don't expect to be
    Bright and bon vivant
So far away from home, so far away Irom home

And I don't know a soul who's not been battered
I don't have a friend who feels at ease
    I don't know a dream that's not been shattered
    or driven to its knees
But it's all right, it's all right
We've lived so well so long
Still, when I think of the road
    we're traveling on
    I wonder what went wrong
I can't help it, I wonder what went wrong

And I dreamed I was dying
And I dreamed that my soul rose unexpectedly
And looking back down at me
    Smiled reassunngly
And I dreamed I was flying
And high up above my eyes could clearly see
    The Statue of Liberty
    Sailing away to sea
And I dreamed I was flying

We come on the ship they call the Mayflower
We come on the ship that sailed the moon
We come in the age's most uncertain hour
    and sing an American tune
But it's all right, it's all right
    You can't be forever blessed
Still, tomorrow's going to be another working day
And I'm trying to get some rest
That's all I'm trying to get some rest

Here's one for all us MANLY MEN

When you see a deer you see Bambi
And I see antlers up on the wall
When you see a lake you think picnics
And I see a large mouth up under that log
You're probably thinking that you're going to change me
In some ways well maybe you might
Scrub me down, dress me up oh but no matter what
    remember I'm still a guy

When you see a priceless French painting
I see a drunk, naked girl
You think that riding a wild bull sounds crazy
And I'd like to give it a whirl
Well love makes a man do some things he ain't proud of
And in a weak moment I might walk your sissy dog, hold your purse at the mall
But remember, I'm still a guy

    I'll pour out my heart
Hold your hand in the car
Write a love song that makes you cry
Then turn right around knock some jerk to the ground
'Cause he copped a feel as you walked by

I can hear you now talking to your friends
Saying, "Yeah girls he's come a long way"
From dragging his knuckles and carrying a club
And building a fire in a cave
But when you say a backrub means only a backrub
Then you swat my hand when I try
Well, now what can I say at the end of the day
    Honey, I'm still a guy

And I'll pour out my heart
Hold your hand in the car
Write a love song that makes you cry
Then turn right around knock some jerk to the ground
'Cause he copped a feel as you walked by

These days there's dudes getting facials
    Manicured, waxed and botoxed
With deep spray-on tans and creamy lotiony hands
    You can't grip a tacklebox

Yeah with all of these men lining up to get neutered
It's hip now to be feminized
    I don't highlight my hair
    I've still got a pair
Yeah honey, I'm still a guy

    Oh my eyebrows ain't plucked
There's a gun in my truck
Oh thank God, I'm still a guy

Nothin beats good ole southern rock -n- blues.

    (gary rossington - ronnie vanzant)

Mama told me when I was young
Come sit beside me, my only son
And listen closely to what I say.
    And if you do this
It will help you some sunny day.
Take your time... dont live too fast,
Troubles will come and they will pass.
Go find a woman and youll find love,
    And dont forget son,
    There is someone up above.

    (chorus)
And be a simple kind of man.
Be something you love and understand.
Be a simple kind of man.
Wont you do this for me son,
    If you can?

Forget your lust for the rich mans gold
All that you need is in your soul,
And you can do this if you try.
All that I want for you my son,
    Is to be satisfied.

    (chorus)

Boy, dont you worry... youll find yourself.
Follow you heart and nothing else.
And you can do this if you try.
All I want for you my son,
    Is to be satisfied.

    (chorus)

My wife wrote this as a poem I looked @ it and had a song made out of it in about a beer and a half ! About ten minutes .
Taking a ride on a sweet train to nowhere
Has always been the way to go
not knowing the day or what will befall me
chorus: its always the way that i've gone
and lately the train stops no more
and lately the train goes on by
Im always waiting for the train
    that has left the station
SWEET TRAIN TO NOWHERE can't catch me no more
a new track I'm riding to new dreams
    chorus2 I'm riding a different train
    My new dreams are waiting
    Left the hard luck station
Taking A RIDE ON A SWEET TRAIN TO NOWHERE
has always been the way to go

    heres another one i wrote

    take me back

see the smoke come off the mountaintop
see the train come round the bend.
lord, i'd love to hop that freight train.
to take me back to where its been

    from the coast of California
    to the hills of Tennesee
to the city of New Orleans
    to the Mississippi Queen

take me back, now take me back freight train
you know i cant stay gone to long
the winter geese are flying home now
you know my homes where i belong
    where i belong
    where i belong
    where i belong
