I have seen many pictures of pretty big (to me at least) flatheads that have been cought in this area that is in the picture below.

I don't have a boat so I am limited to bank fishing (I have waders but some spots are too deep to go through.... for example its about 10-16 feet deep on the side with the fast water where the dam gates are so there's no way to get to the other side of the river opposite of the parking lot).

If you look at the pic, you can see a small island which I fish off of. In the red dot is a good spot where I can cast far out without the trees being in the way behind me. The yellow territory gives you a good idea of how far I can cast.

Do you guys think I have a chance catching a flathead from that area or am I wasting my time?

Those oxygenated tailwaters look pretty good to me. Especially at night. But you said you were fishing from the bank. Are you wading to that spot? If you are, be careful at night. The river has a tendency to rise without you realizing it. Good fishing when it's on the rise. But You might get caught out there in fast moving water before you realize what's happening.

without knowing the currents or depths heres some spots I would try, don't know what access you have to where either. the red areas would be okay with the yellow areas where I would really want to place baits. I would aim for seams, backflows, and especially any areas that hold something to break the current, some of the best flathead holes in fast moving water like that are rock or rubble or even a single boulder that is big enough for a big cat to hide behind and stay out of the main current, while dodging out to grab baits as they swim by, ambush predator, think about good ambush points! The red area is mainly where I would drop baits looking for active fish at night, the yellow would be the hotspot areas and possible hole areas where a guy might find them day or night, also look for and study baitfish movements and watch for ambush points along the way. hope this helps alittle.

Thank you so much for the help brothers!

I am so glad I joined this forum. I am definitely sticking around here for a long time because I have alot to learn. I have been fishing for about 10 years but I want to get more serious about it.

Thanks again,

if you zoom in on that photo you will see where the dark brown areas meet the light green and light brown areas. fish those areas at night time just on the edge of the dark brown areas. looks like a pretty good spot right down your straight line from the red dot to the left. hopefully theres some sort of structure there as well

Don really did a good job, and I would agree. If I were you I would fish everywhere on that map, until I find the "spot." And you will know when you find it.

Good Luck, and Happy Fishing!

I would also try fishing on the back side of the island where the island creates a slack water spot with slow moving current place your bait on the bottom or under a float, The slow current with a float will keep your line headed down stream and will be harder for your bait to double back to ya, but i would try both way's and see what works look's like a few good spot also for channel cat's just might get a big channel while fishing for flatty's also.....Sniper

I actually know this spot...lol...dont worry, i wont tell. I am curious as to how you are getting to the island. From what i can remember, its too deep to wade out there, unless you wait for it to REALLY dry up. And with all the rain we've been having, that isnt likely to be soon.

Check out the upper end of that island and the lower end also. But the upper end should have a hole washed out from the current as most will have one along the upper point.
Also as was posted fish with a float and cover more water and see whats there. If the waters 10ft deep fish 7ft and watch for it to bottom out . This will also give you a chance to check the depth and find where to fish.

I'd be all over that little dude, compared to the size of the car and measured it is about 7-8 car lengths away from the middle parking. You can cast that, and reach the top right side I believe.

Just behind, and inbetween all the small batchs of trees in the front and around the island gives you calmer water that make nice ambush/hang-outs for Mr Big Flatty. I kinda like the middle right to lower section more with the current breaks by the small batchs of trees and the backside of the main island.

Its already been said, The color breaks in the water is a tattle tale sign of drops in water depth, the darker the deeper IMHO, You get set-up on these shelves just along the edges at night. Make sure your rods are in good holders. Live baitfish would be my choice 3-6" floated just above and along the bottom(weight dragging the bottom) kinda bottom bounceing the rig down stream.

I do believe you will be posting a picture of one soon.

To bad I ain't your neighbor LOL.Good Luck.

I would invest in some rods that can sling a large weight 50 or more yards and fish from the bank.

Wading across a fast moving stream with or without waders is a potentially dangerous proposition. If you slip and your waders fill up, off you go river rafting without the raft. Plus it is a pain to carry all your gear. It looks to me like you could pretty much fish the whole left side of the river from the access points on the left bank.

Im going to steal Don's great idea with the color shades, with my own twist of course..

BLUE= DAY SPOTS... Cut banks and holes where they will stay throughout the day (their home)

RED= NIGHT SPOTS... Spots where I think they would bounce around at night which includes great ambush points around the island and right side along with depth variations. The scour holes BELOW AND ABOVE the dams will great at night to with all the baitfish getting sucked in and spit out.

YELLOW= SPOTS I would try while fishing the others day or night or if the others don't produce... Urban design Map Tree World Plan
