I stopped in Advanced Auto yesterday evening in Columbus Ohio and bought three gallons of Quicksilver premium, $29.99 plus tax per gal. This is the first oil I have had to buy in a couple years and couldn't beleive how much it has gone up in price. Just wondering what oil you other Mercury owners use what you pay. I am afraid this stuff is going to keep going up in price so I think I will pick up another 4-5 gallon next trip up there and that should last for a 2-3 more years. I noticed Advanced had Pennzoil for about half the price of Quicksilver but I would rather pay extra and stay with what Merc recomends. Even at $29.99 it is still cheaper than an engine(just my thoughts)

Ive been using the Pennzoil for 3 years now in my 50hp merc and still going strong, did a compression test last month and it still pumps out the same numbers it did when it was new..

When we had evinrudes all we ever used was quicksilver oil. Great stuff. Now that i have a yamaha, i run yamaha oil (also supposed to be good stuff). I've heard a lot of people running pennzoil marine oil too.
I think as long as you run a good brand name TCW-3 oil you probably cant go wrong. We were cautioned about running Lubri-matic from the dealer....they said DO NOT use lubri-matic greases or oils, and mentioned that there are plenty of other brands that are ok to use.

Alot of the major manufactures have their oil bottled by Citgo. You can read the msds on the oils to see where they come from. It is still hard for me to stray from Yamalube because I can get it in bulk if I bring my own clean gallon jug from a local dealer. The last I bought was $20/gal.

My motor requires Mercury DFI or Quicksilver DFI, and that is all I'm putting in it!
First I still have warranty left on my motor and I don't want to void that in case something does happen.
I was told it would be about 10g's to replace my motor and that is not a risk I want to take over a few bucks of cheap oil.
I've seen to many 2 strokes take a crap from cheap oil.
I run only what the mfgr says.

Mercs get Merc oil
Lawnboys get Lawnboy oil
Polaris's get Polaris oil
Stihl gets Stihl oil
Etc.

I have never fried a 2 stroke in my life and I don't intend to on account of an off brand cheaper oil, just not worth it IMHO.

I am not trying to convence any one to buy what I buy but you can keep useing higher priced oils and I'll keep useing my old evenrude with about 3 thousand hrs on it with my cheaper oils. I own a 05 Yamaha 2 stroke & the dealer filled it with & recommended Mercury Premium Plus oil(red/black bottle)$30 gallon bulk.I also use the Yamalube ring additive once a year. The service guy at BPS said they use the Quicksilver in all their motors, from the 15's to the 200 Opitimax.
