Here's my personal best flathead catfish caught last friday shortly after midnight on a live bullhead.

    48lbs, 44" Length x 29" Girth

My previous personal best was only 26lbs so I darn near doubled it in one night! My fishing partner that evening landed a 55 pounder about 1 year ago from the exact same spot! I'm glad he was the guy in the boat with me, it made it that much more special. I just wish I would have had a photo of me when she broke the surface, it was awesome!

Of course she was released to be caught again!

Great fish Chris!!! Minnesota, huh? That means Michigan must have some fifty pounders too (I hope). Where did you catch the fish? Isn't that close to a Minnesota state record?

The Minnesota state record is around 75 lbs I believe. I've got a long way to go to reach that. I know a few folks who have caught 60s up here but they are so few and far between it is really special when you get one.

We're pretty much on the upper end of the flathead catfishes range with only 3 major rivers holding decent populations of them. The Mississippi River of course, the St. Croix, and the Minnesota river. Mine came from the Minnesota.

Most of the guys I know practice strictly catch & release on flatheads. They are somewhat rare up here, not so rare that you can't pattern them and consistently catch them but they aren't free for the taking in my opinion. If I want a meal of catfish, we've got plenty of channel cats too!

Great fish Chris! Thanks for the pictures. I am curious as to where on the Minnesota River you caught it?
