I am curious and slightly confused as to what is required to be on your boat by the state on inland waters. I have looked online and in the game & fish booklet. The VDIGF is rather confusing and contradictory as you try to read through anything they print. Is their a simple checklist anywhere or can anyone verify what is required?
I will only be fishing lakes and the lower James River. These things seem to be factored into the requirements. The boat is 21’ and has a permanent mounted fuel tank.
If you fish below the fall line then you have to meet Coast Guard requirements. All of the marine stores (like West Marine) have booklets that list the required equipment.
If anyone happens onto this - requirements are also dictated by the size of the boat. Anything under 16 feet has different requirements, etc. Regardless of size, it's a good idea to keep a good safety arsenal...especially if fishing at night.
The throw cushion has to be within reach of the captains chair.
Also, make sure fire extinguisher has not expired. They will check that as well.
