I love catching fish with a fly rod, but them old cats tend not to eat flies as readily as basses. I often get around this by attaching regular monofilament line to my sinking fly line. I will attach either a slip sinker rig or just a hook on the mono.
Scotty makes a rod holder specifically for fly rods. Bait up with the bait of the day and you are drift fishing with a fly rod. Great fun

I caught a channel cat last month fly fishing - its around the 8:40 mark - (to save you from having to watch all the other boring parts)

The pattern I was using is called the Greasy Monkey by Bryan W.
Here is a how to on tying it - https://vimeo.com/41821191
