Hmmmm, I guess we are still spoiled here in SC. I'm pretty sure we still hold the world record for channel catfish. Anyway, 100 lb blues have been pulled out of the lowcountry lakes and 50 lb+ cats are fairly common in the rivers and lakes. A buddy of mine actually pulled a 35 lb blue out of a cold-water mountain lake in the upper part of the state.

    in southwest ohio id say,
    • channels....
    • 7-8lb good
    • 10-12lb big
    • 15-18lb HUGE!
    • flatheads....
    • 10-15lb good
    • 15-25lb big
    • 30-40lb huge
blues are endangered and very rare (except for ohio river) so i cant really comment

On the lake I primarily fish, which is Lake Wylie, here is my opinion:

    Channels
4-5 pounds is a good average fish
10 pounds is the upper limits
    20+ pounds is unheard of

    Blues
6-8 pounds is an average fish
    20-25 is the upper limits
    40+ pounds is unheard of

    Flatheads
    7-9 is the average fish
    40-50 is the upper limits
    60+ pounds is unheard of

Arkansas state records for rod and reel are:
    Blue 116 3/4 pounds
    channel 38 pounds
flat 80 pounds , a flathead weighing 129 was caught in the Arkansas River at Little Rock a few years ago, but it was caught on a snag line and didn't qualify for the record book at the time, there is now an unrestricted record, but not at the time.

    For me :
    channel 5 good, 10 big, 15+ huge
blues and flats 20 good, 30 big , 50+ huge

When I get one over 50 ya'll will hear me yell'n all the way up there in Kansas.

    good Blue 10 to 20....Big is 20 to 60.....huge is 60+
    good Flathead-10 to 20....Big is 20 to 40.....huge ia 40+

Blues and flats over 150lbs. If they are out there, louisiana has them.

Hey Brad I live in south central ILL. I would have to say that the fish here are about the same as you have listed.

Of course the world record and ILL state record blue was caught about 1.5 hrs from my house. Who would have thought.

My local lake most of the Channels are eater fish with a few 6 to 10 lb thrown in. Then last year Butchy went and ruined it and caught a 30 plus lb channel from the same lake. It makes you wonder what is really out there if you fish for the bigguns.

dont know what the state records are for deep south louisiana. but with all this water we got, they got to be some bigens down here. i really just started fishing for cats this last year. and my two biggest blues this year have been a 18 and a 21. biggest flathead was a 12. i have learned alot from 2 buddies here on the BOC, but both of them dont really want to hunt for the big boys, they like the eating size. going back out sunday, hope to break my PB. charlie r

Realistically 30 to 40lbs is about it for blues and flatheads in this area. THe scales we use are all off by about 40-50lbs.LOL. All of the big fish are in payponds in ohio and indiana now. RIGHT!!!
