Is it possible to catch channels from the bank in East Texas during the winter? I've never really fished in the winter, mainly because I thought cats didn't bite well in the winter in this area, but I'd like to try it out. What would be a good bait to use?

I don't think catfish take vacations in Texas during the winter. Yes, its possible. Its just being in the right place with the depth of water the fish want and when they are eating. Because cast bait is difficult to come by near shore in the winter, I toss frozen shrimp, worms, liver, frozen shad, hot dogs, and anything else out there. I prefer fresh sad or bream, but you gotta use what you can catch. Minnows may work, though I don't buy them. Goldfish will work too.

I agree with gadzooks, just because its cold doesn't mean the fish won't bite. You may want to try a little of DK punch bait with #4 treble. DK at WM. I also said if you got the urge to go fishing GO whe ther they are biting or not. Don't know until you try!

Only if you have a bait in the water! Won't catch a single one otherwise!

Course that would apply any other season as well!

when i fish from bank, i take all my rods. i use a variety of bait and distances from shore (unless i know where the whole is.)
This way i can find where and what the fish are eating.
If getting hits on only one bait, switch all rods to that.

I catch channels all year around on shrimp soaked in vanilla. Works great.
