Ever go out to castnet shad and find they are flipping just out of reach of your castnet?

Here is something I do if that happens, and it works well.

We all know when you throw your castnet in the water it scares the shad and they scatter.

If I find the shad are just out of reach of my castnet, I throw rocks above them and most times it scares the shad and forces them to come in closer to the bank.

this works best in lakes, and ponds especially smaller areas even spillways.

Many times I have thrown my net for up to an hr with no luck then started chunking rocks out in the water, and have left with dozens of shad.

This even works at times if they are not flipping, If I dont see them, and cant catch them I assume they are are still there just out a little to far.

So I start junking rocks as far as I can throw them, then start to decrese the distance untill I am within range of my castnet.

Most times it works, and I get plenty of bait.

Good tip Jack. I have also found that you can draw shad/gills by throwing out coffee grounds, dried. Thanks.

Dynamite would probably work as well. As long as you didn't plan on putting them in a livewell.

I also used to use this trick when squirrel hunting...If I had a squirrel that I kept chasing around a tree and it would not offer a shot, I would pick up a branch and toss it on the other side of the tree, the squirrel would think it was me and run around to my side offering a shot:wink:
