while bank fishing for cats in a lake...I like to use a three-way rig..I'm not sure if the leader to the hook should be longer than the leader to the weight? I don't want the bait on the bottom..

I do make sure the leader to the weight is lighter so to break away if it gets stuck...
    what are your rec's

I like using 3 way rigs in the Ohio river for bank fishing. I make my leader for the lead about 16-24 inchs as you said with a smaller pound test. I like the leader for the hook to be about 6 inchs. With the current of the river the rig leans a bit but the bait stays off the bottom.

I use a very short drop for my hook only about 3-4 inches long. My sinker drop is anywhere from 16 inches to 3 foot long depending on conditions.
