Greetings! I found this place yesterday. I cant believe that a nation wide organization has this thing set up so us locals can talk so easily.
I live east of Spencer. and have been spending at least three nights a month on the river about three miles south of town since i got my canoe in June.
Sorry to hear about the ticket recieved at the last gathering, it was better than a $200 ticket.
I have fished all my life, 45 years of it anyway. spent alot of time on flatrock river growing up due to having a father who would rather fish than eat.
I was very lucky. I am new to fishing for Big cats, but am learning slowly. the biggest ( only ) flat head I have got this summer was about 18 pounds.
I have caught a bunck of very healthy and colorful channells fron 1 to 6 pounds. The west fork has changed alot for the better since I fished it in the early seventies. There is a great bait shop about 1.5 miles north of spencer on 231 and these guys are great, very helpful. I must be careful, dont want to violate in one of my first threads. I look forward to meeting you guys at the next gathering and getting some lessons, I will bring my notebook!
Respect the rivers!

Good to have you here Brushy Bill,
When you talk about the bait shop i'm assuming your talking about Phils Place (Spencer Bait & Tackle). He's a nice guy. Don't worry about a thread like that, we always like to know where the good baitshops are at.
Do you fish any for flatheads down there ?
I'm just north of you in Martinsville.
Hey, its a pleasure to have you here and i hope you'll enjoy ! These guys on this site know how to fish, and they are a great group of people !! :)

Thanks for the welcome guys. And yes, there are Typer. I have been putting in about 3 miles south of town and paddling up river about 1.5 miles there is a large gravel / sand pit there that is connected to the river. there is a large rock bar where the two meet. the river takes a sharp right hand turn and that bend holds alot of fish. there is a large stone bluff on south before you get to Freedom and people tell me that they have been getting some good size flatheads along there in the last 2 weeks. Since I am using a canoe, I have not ventured downriver that far. I am looking for a place to put in and go up river to it. I prefer to go up instead of going down river from my vehicle. when you go down river, you go alot farther than you realize. makes going back a long trip. There is a public access site, the turn off is about 2.5 - 3 miles east of the junction of 46 and 231 in spencer. the road that leads to it is on the right, watch for sign. If your motorized, you can get to both of these places fairly easily. I usually paddle untill i find a good place to camp / fish and just pull off and set up for the night. I will be on the gravel bar at the gravel pit this saturday night. the river should be back down according to the USGS. When the spencer gage is below 5 feet, there is a sand bar island that comes out that makes it easy to fish that sharp bend that i spoke of. I really dont have the equipment to bring the huge ones in, ( only fishing with 20 lb. test right now.) But the guys at Fisherman's Choice is gonna set me up with a rod and reel that can handle 50 lb. test and i can fish the larger baits with that. It is amazing how many fish are in that river. If your down that way, there is some eagles nesting just down river from the gravel pit, their awsome to see, keep an eye out.

Hi Bill! Welcome to the Brotherhood!! ;) Sometime this month we are going to have another gathering,(but this time everyone is going to have a license)lol. Anyways, we actually own land down in Spencer. It's called the Yager's Club. There are about fifty members. We go down there and hunt and fish every once and a while. I know about Phils Place. It's on the way. Would you be interested in a gathering down south near Scottsburg? Replies guys?

Hello lilryjoe, The shop I spoke of is NOT Phil's. it is "fishermans choice"
they are located about 2 -3 miles south of phils. alot of the guys that fish at phils come down there to get bait and take back to phils.
Speaking of scottsburg, i have family there ( all around there as a matter of fact ) my parents live about a 8 minute drive from hardy. It would be very easy for me to come to scottsburg and fish.

Thanks BigCat. And to ELPHABA7, I am one of those who do not believe that Pat Garrett shot Billy. if that is what the documentary you spoke of was about. And Thanks to you too for the welcome.
It was indeed, Bill. ;) The conspiracy and cover up of the ending of Billy the Kid...do you think Brushy Bill was Billy the Kid?

Thanks, it's nice to have you here. :rock-big:
