What do you guys have on your boats that you consider essential? Other than the obvious(lifejackets, etc) things.
depth finder, quality rod holders, landing net, fish grippers or gloves, big wreck anchor. Drift sock or drift buckets if you fish deep water, gill net or cast net, 2 coolers(1 for cut bait, 1 for food/drinks) lots of ice & drinks during this hot weather, tomorrow thru the weekend will have highs of 80s so better than normal) extra tackle ie weights, leader line, hooks, pliers, scissors, tape, fillet knives, zip ties, ziplock bags, waterproof box for your cell, keys, wallet, registration, etc. spare plug, dry clothes if you get wet, bug spray, flashlight, extra batteries, lighter, first aid kit, fire extinguisher, scale, camera, tools, ie scre driver, wrench etc, towels, vhf radio, only other things I can think of right now are a portable grill if you have room and IMHO a bimini top is a necessity in this hot weather, it makes the weather more bearable and you can stay out longer. What do you guys have on your boats that you consider essential? Actually, after July 1st, it is required, isn't it?Start with the safety items first...things that will get you on and off the water as well as get you back into the boat if you should fall overboard. Then, think about fishing stuff. Sure you want to catch fish but safety should always be first in your thoughts. I would also recommend a boating safety course...there are several on line that you could take.
Good luck.
yep thats good stuff too, I have a tub that pre-mixes with 5 gallons of oil, you can never have too much oil, also maybe a bottle of fuel treatment, I keep that, also a latern, extra fuses like he said, spare plug and prop is definetly good to have in case you tear up one. rope is definetly great too, I have bought so much rope lately its rediculous, maybe some chem lights for back up, a back up bilge pump, air horn, whistle, flares, also if you have room maybe some jumper cables, I have had times where I didnt charge my batteries and luckily I had them on my boatPretty much what Ramon06 said but I would add a few things. Rope .. you can never have to much rope on a boat, an extra plug, extra fuses, extra oil, an extra prop if you can afford it!
nope just jet ski's etc. it goes by your age, im 33 I think I have till 2012 or 2014 one of themActually, after July 1st, it is required, isn't it?
yeah dont forget the hand cleaner like Larry said or a bottle of sanitizer, paper towels, trash bags. cuttin board, lol luckily I have a sinkEverything Ramon said will allow you to fish and even equip you for a luxury dinner cruise if you get tired of fishing! lol
Trust me, Ramon's boat is WELL equipped....
The only thing I would add is cleaning stuff.....CATFISHING IS DIRTY! I carry GO-JO handcleaner and plenty of rags/paper towels and trashbags. Zip-lock bags are great for putting the bait in then put it on ice. Once you cut up a peice of bait put your sections you didn't use in another ziplock bag to keep them fresh. And not sure if Ramon mentioned it but a cutting board or something similiar is a necessity. VHF radio for sure and a GPS (even a cheap handheld) so you can give your location in case you need assistance.....You don't hear much about stranded/sinking boats or people overboard much on the news unless they are killed but keep your radio on 16 during a busy weekend and you will here plenty of distress and may-day calls! The first thing the coast gaurd will ask is your location....If you can't tell them then you are screwed!
I also keep extra spark plugs and starting fluid
...and the prop that NiKO mentioned! The only time I have ever been stranded on the water was from a bad prop bushing.....Luckily I was close to the dock and used the trolling motor
PS...I think the coast gaurd website has a printable check list
At this point I'm imagining you have a small yacht.yeah dont forget the hand cleaner like Larry said or a bottle of sanitizer, paper towels, trash bags. cuttin board, lol luckily I have a sink

Ramon's boat isn't called the "CAT-ILLAC" for nothing! At this point I'm imagining you have a small yacht.
Wow. Awesome replies! That's a lot more than I initially thought about.
My old man has an old bayliner sitting in the yard, doesn't run, needs carb work and a few other things, so I'm considering putting some effort and money into it. I need to take a closer look, but its a bowrider type boat.

Ramon,
Lisa wanted me to let you know that you should add "fishing license" to the list. LMAO
