In your opinion, what are THE BEST baits to use so that I'd have the chance to hook up with channels, flats, and even blues. IS their some kind of "universal bait" that will catch these species consistently, or is God keeping that one for himself?

i agree with these guys fresh cut bait would work best. even though live bait is better for flatheads, a fresh piece of cut bait will do it.

When people talk about using goldfish, do they mean the goldfish that you can get at petstores? If so is that where you get yours?

you can get them at pet stores but they are really expensive. bait shops sell them a little cheaper. in my opinion they dont work any better than bluegills, they are a little tougher though.

Fresh cut shad or skipjack, small bream, larger minnows or goldfish will generally catch all three. Shad & skipjack are extremely difficult to keep alive; I won't even bother trying; also, any shad that you can keep alive are usually too large for channels.

I would vote for fresh cut shad..I have tried frozen skipjack with poor results, so I dont know how fresh skipjack would work..But since alot of people like skippies they have to have something going for them.

Shad are abudent in the river I fish, there is no or few skipjack, that may be why the fish dont seem to like them.

I would guess cut shad since it is prob the most widespread and easy to get.

for eating size catfish it's hard to beat shrimp, uncooked in the shell, live if you can find them, I can't find them live here in tennessee. Wish I could.
