noticed on my last fishing trip that while underway my tach will sometimes jump ahead past 6000 rpm and the motor is not reving up. I can tap on it and it usuially will settle down for a few minutes, does this sound like a loose connection and if so where to start looking for it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Appears to be more like the tach itself is going bad.

Is it a vacume type or cable?

All tachs I have seen on boats work off the electrical system.
