when you catch a fish that swallows the hook,do you keep it or let it go if it still looks lively ?

what are the chances the fish can live with the hook in its gut ?

Depends if I'm fishing for eaters. But If it's a release day I will clip the line and let it go. The hook will pass through. I've caught eaters with hooks in there gut Heck I even had one that the hook had passed all the way through. Just barely sticking in him:eek:oooh:

They will usually survive, but I kill 'em and eat 'em anyways.

If its eater size, Ill keep it and get the hook out later when I clean it. If its a big boy, I cut the line and let him go. The hook will rust out eventually.

Some people avoid treble hooks for this reason, but if I am fishing for eaters, I don't really care if he swallows the hook, as long as I am landing the fish. I can always clip the line and get the hook out later when I am cleaning him.

For big cats using live bait, I prefer circles anyway, and gut-hookings are rarer but still do happen with those. In that case I'd just clip the line and let the fish go, hoping he survived.
