:wink:Went out last and something happened thats never happened to me before. I was out in a cove by a creek channel had some dough bait on bottom for cats, to break the boredom of waitin i threw out a pumpkin colored gulp lizard for the bass. Well I let it settle to the bottom right next to weed line on the bank, when I started to reel in a litlle felt a tug back. I had only 6 pound test on so it took me awhile to get it in, but it never top the water. To my surprise it was a 7 pound channel, how surprised I was. Goin again this afternoon to try it again.

i have caught a bullhead on a spinner on the top of the waterfall coming into olathe lake before.
he did come to the surface, and because of the color i did think it was a bass at first, he just came up and splashed and was back down, and i thought i had a small bass till he was a few feet from shore......

When Matt(MDSpoula) and me were anchored and fishing with cutbait yesterday, he was throwing a rattletrap for the same reason, and pulled in about a 2# Channel cat:smile2:,
way to go on your catch.

Catfish are not just bottom feeders, they are just as much a predator as
a ba$$ especially when they get up around 5lb. But ba$$fishermen are
terribly disappointed and feel like they have been tricked when they haul
in one of these 5lb+ cats. Oh, well. Picky folks just don't eat well, I guess.

Nice to see you postin Michael. Are you coming to Perry?
Catfish are opportunistic. They will eat ANYTHING that they feel will make a good meal.
Besides that, they are just plain MEAN!:cool2::smile2:

Caught a channel cat on a fly rod once when fishing for gills. It was quite the surprise :smile2:

I've caught them on rattlin traps, and one of the catfish magazines in 2008 had a big article on fishing for them with plastics.

I think your just too complex for a short name to sum it all up. It has to include your redneckness, mountain dew, diving for gar, and logjams.

Kyle, I don't think I'll be at the September gathering because I got roped
into doing another weekend event for the Society for Creative Anachronism(SCA).
I'm a long time member in the local group and am known for being able
to help with damage control on the fly at an event.
So I'll be running around handling minor emergencies from Friday evening
through Sunday morning and too frazzeled to do much except stare at
the wall and suck my thumb until Monday morning. There can be too
much fun...trust me on this one. See ya at Milford in October!

That's awesome to hear Countryboy! Do you remember the an old top water bass bait call a "Lucky 13". It's a popper type lure. I use to catch channel cat on these in ponds all the time. I never could figure it out, but it was always a pleasant surprise. Here recently during the spring time at Hillsdale, I use a "thumpin-shad" for crappie and fish brush piles and other structure and always seem to catch a couple of channel cat a year on them. It's amazing what type a predator these catfish are. And wow do they hit hard!!
