Never used circle hooks mostly because they gap between the point and the bend of the hook seemed small for the size baits I use. My question is...If i usually use a 5/0 J hook what size circle should I use? Most of my bait is small threadfin and/or Gizzard shad

It really depends on where you're hooking your bait.

You need to ensure that the point of the hook isn't going to bury itself anywhere except the fish itself. A 1/0 circle hook placed just through the lips of a shad might work fine, but hooking it through the dorsal area would probably not work w/that size of hook.

I use a size 5 circle and have never had trouble catching 10lbs and up cats. Half the time i dont even have to set the hook.
