HELEN - The U.S. Forest Service has been fighting a wildfire in Northern White County since last week and hope to contain the blaze in the next few days.

U.S. Forestry officials in Clarkesville said the fire is northeast of Raven Cliffs parking lot off the Richard Russell Scenic Highway in the Mark Trail Wilderness Area in an area known as Stoney Knob.

According to the forest service the fire was started by a lightening strike from a storm that occurred in the area over a week ago. The fire, which has consumed 125 acres and is expected to burn 375 acres before containment.

There are approximately 50 firefighters working the fire and officials say this includes two crews from outside the state as well as local personnel. Because it’s in a wilderness area fire fighters are limited on how they fight the fire, they are limited to hand tools, but have gotten approval to use chainsaws when needed.

Forest service officials say local residents may see a large area of smoke in the Helen, Robertstown and Cleveland area for the next several days.
