ok im new at working on motors and i recently put a new fuel pump on my 90' 25 horse johnson. After putting the fuel pump on i primed the bulb until it was hard and went to start the engine. when turning the key i could hear the starter spinning but it looked like it wasn't jumping up to catch the teeth of the motor? I hope there is a simple explanation for this....i just had the boat out two weekends ago and it ran and started up several times just fine. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I hooked up a battery backwards once and the starter turned backwards pushing the gear down instead of up. I know it was a stupid mistake but happened.

You Might ought to check your recetfier. Useually when you turn the post around it blows your charging system.
