Some interesting history doing some research on the sport of catfishing

1st commercialized fish trap for catfish was released in 1906. Basically a iron ring with spikes on both sides. Bait was suspended from the top, when bait was taken, spring released and spikes came down.

First bait holder for catfish, 1907. Basically a net that go’s over the bait and ties to the eye of the hook. Modern variance would be the use of panty hose

First prepared bait mentioned that was to be used in pursuing catfish was released in 1928. Cheese, wheat, Licorice, oil, etc.

1st modern bait holder used to hold bait on the hook was released in 1949. A simple rubber cup fashioned on the bottom of a treble hook.

The first modern type lure where the marketing material stated that one of the species it was effective on was catfish, released in 1949. Lure resembled a plastic frog with treble hook. In 1923 a live frog rig was released, basically securing a frog onto a special hook with a harness.

Lots of other weirder stuff.... :smile2:
