1 C butter 1 C sugar 2 eggs (add one at a time) 1/4 C milk 1 tsp flavoring (lemon or whatever you like) 3 C flour 2 tsp cream of tartar 1 tsp soda mix first 5 ingredients stir in dry ingredients Chill 2 hours or more Use a light colored cookie sheet lined with pastry paper. (dark colored pans don't work as well) Roll dough in small balls. Place on cookie sheet. Dip a level glass bottom in butter and then sugar so that you can mash the cookie ball flat. (I use a small drinking glass.) Bake 10-12 minutes at 350 degrees. Take out before they brown or they won't be soft. Just tap the cookie and if it springs back it's ready. Cool and add frosting if you want them sweeter.
