Just saw a 4' blacksnake in the yard, and I'm glad he's there. He along with his buddies and our cats keep small pests away. I have never seen a poisonous snake on our 17 acres, but am sure they're there. Timber rattlers and copperheads. If I see one near the house, he'll be dead. (Just don't let this leak out to TWRA, that's illegal.)

If I was camping somewhere and poisonous snakes came near the campsite, I might destroy them..Otherwise, I let them alone.

What do you do when you see snakes? Some folks think the diamod backed water snake is a water Moccasin and they run for their lives. One time one of my neighbors was pulling up all his one yr old landscaping shrubbery I'm sure he spent several hundred dollars for. I asked why he was doling that and he said he had killed 2 copperheads in there. He showed me one of the snakes, of all things it was a garter snake. I didn't want to embarrass him so I said nothing.

Do you fear all species of snakes? Do you kill them or leave them alone?

Last week i caught a king snake about 3 feet long and turned it loose in my shed. Copperheads are thick here and they get killed if i get a lick at em. I grew up on a minnow farm and snakes don't bother me unless it's a cottonmouth or other poisonous species. They all serve a purpose but i don't allow the bad one's to hang around very long.

That the way I use to do it... back when I was more agile...

Snakes, I kill the diamond backs I encounter near the camp..

It sounds like we have a good crew of folks on here with commom sense about snakes. But you'd be surprised how naive how some of my friends who've lived in the country all their lives with their snake knowledge. As I mentioned, some of these nonpoisonous water snakes terrify some folks. There's this old tale about a swimmer diving off the Little Emory bridge and was attacked by a swarm of water moccasins. This story has circulated for at least 40 years, and some still believe every word of it. Tp my knowleddge, there are no water moccasins in this part of TN. Elevation is too high and out of their range. Not sure, there may be some around Memphis or Chattanooga. I have a pretty good bank spot that very few go there but me for fear of water moccasins. :silly:

yep your exactly right festus. just a bit of common sense and awarness of the snake goes along way. generally most snakes are more scared of you than you are them. snakes strike out of fear as i whould to. i sure as heck whouldnt get in a pit with rattlesnakes like they do in texas but if i encounter a timber rattler i just stay away from it if im in the woods. altough i whould like to eat one.:eat:

Poisonous o nonpoisonous, if I see one on my property it gets killed. Right or wrong I don't care. I hate the things and actually get sick when I look at them. I know they are suspose to kill rats etc. , Well I will take the rats any day.

I live right on the very top of a ridge here in southern Mo. It grows rocks and copperheads. I been rakin rock from the back yard today tryin to get a bit more usable yard and had a rather disturbing run in with a copperhead just minutes ago. I'm rakin downhill and pulled a pretty good size rock away from the base of a tree and must have pissed the ole boy off. Bout a 2 foot copperhead strikes the rake and with it's downward momentum is makin his way down hill towards me in a hurry. I probably don't need paul Harvey to tell the rest of the story.Did rake up a couple babys of some kind, not copperheads so they went on down in the timber.

I don't fear snakes more like a respect for them and I definitely don't kill em in the wild. I suppose if it were on your property and theres little tikes around that would be different. I have seen many diamond back water snakes and wondered what they were. Are they poisonous? What are the ones that are mostly black with white spots on them called and are they poisonous?

If a snake is going away I figure leave him alone if he is coiled or comeing at me or another human he will die cause I figure he ain't up to no good in that mind frame but I try to let them live cause if they aren't poisonous they won't hurt you normaly

I myself like all snakes. Fear the poisonous ones, no, but I do respect them. I have a set of snake tongs I have had for years. The venomous ones I have relocated before, but now living where I do in Nebraska have not seen any . But I do teach my kids to respect all animals.

Rattlesnakes are killed here by all who see them. Bullsnakes and other non poisonas snakes are generally left alone. I dont mess with any unless I know they are harmfull like rattlers or copperheads. I kill on site . They eat pretty good as a by product too.
