A 50+ is when you really get a fight on your hands. The biggest that I've caught was 74 lbs so I dont know how a 100 pounder would feel like. Spoonfish has caught a 102 pounder before so maybe he could enlighten us how the fight is from those century fish. :tounge_out:

40 pounders are considered small here and probably males. Most females will avg. around 50-80 lbs.
Dang, thats a pig Troy. I'm trying to see if I can work in a trip out your way to do some snagging. Think you can hook a couple brothers up?

Cuz, if you plan to come over let me know and I can put you on some. That pic. is of one of my friends from last year. Four of them come down from Omaha/Council Bluffs every year and stay for 2 week ends (9) days. They will be here the first week end in April this year so I will be busy fishing that following week, but can go possibly before or after that. That one weighed right around 80 I believe.

Folks, there are a lot of talented people on this site, but Troy aka Spoonfish is truely incredible at spoonbill locating! As good as it gets. And, there is a young man "Seth" who posted earlier, who is really sharp! Everyone should catch a spoonbill in their life. They are so big, you might enjoy releasing the biggest and keeping a small one (say 25 -30lbs). That is still a lot of meat. Hannibal Mike Troy once pulled one out of a hollow tree, halfway up a hill next to Truman lake, in the dark, on January 2nd! I'm stickin' to it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Be sure and let us know if you get something worked out Cuz. I have a Garage full of Snagging gear you are welcome to borrow if you come this way. We used to go every weekend of season from the 50 mm all the way to Warsaw, done the Tourney thing and then kinda got burnt out. A couple times a year now is enough for me. Two years ago I caught one that would have been in the upper 80's, when I got it to the boat it was just tail hooked. Two of us lifted it out of the water long enough to get a pic. and then released it in front of a Dozen boats and one guy actually floated over and gave me a serious azz eating for turning a fish loose that size. I will keep a couple to eat and thats plenty for me. I will be below Warsaw on opening Day this year, Come on over and Join all the other Crazy people I am sure there will be plenty. LOL

This is sounding like it could be a lot of fun.

Looks like I am gonna have to find someone to show me the ropes.
I'll be making several trips down to the James River so my offer to take you still stands. If for some reason I don't head down there, we could always hit the lower Osage below Bagnell where the fish aren't nearly as big, but they taste the best IMO. There's a lot of asian carp in that area to that you snag into also.

I'm heading down there after work next Friday for opening night. I hadn't planned on taking my boat since my buddy and his dad had room in their boat, but if you were interested in going I could haul my boat down there also to make room. I planned on fishing Saturday morning till I got my limit and then go sleep in my buddies dad's RV or at my buddies dorm room depending on where he is staying and then coming home during the day on Saturday.

Let me know if you want to go along or if you would rather wait to go during the daylight sometime. I'm not sure when your spring break is, but I am off work Thursday - Tuesday of the second weekend of snagging season to and we had planned on going back down to the James during that time frame also.

Well that will work out better anyways. Snagging usually gets better once April gets here anyways. My buddy and I are planning on fishing a couple of the spoonbill tournaments up at LoZ this year which will be a first for both of us as we have always snagged the Lower Osage and the James River. Right now it's just the two of us going so if you wanted to go along for that, you're more than welcome also.

The first plan is try and snag some here on the Mississippi River. I know we have large schools of spoonbills here on our section of river, and I know which pockets of the river they like to hole up in. IF we dont find em on the Miss this year, I'm considering making the drive over to Truman. Looks to me like its a 4 hour drive which isnt too bad. I use my Surge Elites and my Shimano Tekotas with 80 Pound braid to snag with and they seem to work fine, is there a better way to snag? What would constitute a good quality snagging rig?

Cuz if your way aint broke then don't fix it.

I like using long 10-15' surf rods and big spinning reels myself, but a lot of people use smaller tackle and do great.

What's the biggest spoonbill that you have caught on the Mississippi down there? They get really big on Tablerock, LoZ, and Truman I know. Last year I managed to catch four of them at chain of rocks one day and the biggest was barely 24" from the fork of the tail to the eye. :eek:oooh:

Actually, I've never gone snagging in search of just spoonies. During snagging season we go snag the asians when the kittens are not biting as the asians sure put up a heck of fight. My biggest spoonbill was an accidental snag that I hooked on a sabiki rig while going for skipjacks and it weighed some 30 pounds or so. I know what the spoons look like on the Lowrance, and we have some pretty good areas around here, so well see what happens. If I cant get them, I'm going to try and get a couple of the club bros to jump and head down to Truman with me. Well see what happens here in a couple of weeks.

Good luck Mr. Cuz. If you can't find them on the Mississippi, then you can bet that ol Spoonfish can tell you how to find them on Truman. :smile2: I'd like to meet up with him for a snagging trip myself one of these days.
